Monte Carlo loses badly
On my way home form class tonight I was flying down I-75 around Lima when I past a mid 80's Monte Carlo SS. When I went by I could tell it was not stock... flowmaster, wider tires, ect. Who knows what was under the hood though. Well I was running 75mph or so and I look to my left and he had pulled back up next to me. i wave and he guns it, so I figure, what the hell. By the time I hit 100 I was already a car ahead. That guy must of been on crack, though I think my RS badging must of tricked him. I love my car.

I have no idea what i'm running right now. I would like to tink maybe low 14's, but I have never ran it on a track yet. The only non-stock part is a cat-back exhaust from slp, the two on the left deal. The 350 RS does get them most of the time.

Waaaay back I used to own a '88 Firechicken (2.8l). I outran a Monte Carlo SS (stock-looking) at over 100 mph! I would slow down...he'd catch up...then I'd walk away.
Those old SS's were all show-no go (stock)...IMO.
Good kill of a modded one, tho!

Ok, here is where the story gets even better. I walked out of class last night and noticed a monte ss parked behind me. I didn't think it could of been the same one so I get in my car and I am about to leave when I hear the monte fire up. Wonce I heard it, I knew it was the same one. So I got out and went back to the driver and It was the kid that sits behind me. Yeah, and get this, he said the reason he lost is becuase his engine was cold. We raced about 8 miles from our school and 3 of them are through town. I didn't call him on it, I just figure I'll wait till warmer wheater and show him up again.

Yo, watch out, once the monte hits 3rd gear its power is gone. But hey, He has 3.73 gears and I bet hell will get you off the line and smoke you through 3rd.
After that he has nothin.
Youll win but I know for a fact that his car gets more looks than your RS because my brothers monte gets more looks than my Iroc.

well, it all depends on which year MCSS you raced. My 1984 model came with a th350 and 3.42 gears, it ran out of steam at 100mph stock.
In my cars current form(TPI-350, with above tranny and gears), I have been beaten by cavilers at 100mph and smoked many 3rd and a few 4th gen camaros off the line through 3rd.
I am assuming that your car is an overdrive car and your car most likely has less gearing(suitable for highway speed racing), this makes your car a winner every time.
Good highway speed kill since the guy went for it. A kill is a kill, but i would not recommend that from a stop or a slow roll against a car better suited to do a stop light run.
"Those old SS's were all show-no go (stock)...IMO. "
You bring a stock 1983 camaro Z28 and I'll bring my "all show-no go" stock 1983 MCSS(the SS was a faster stock production car than the Z28 in 1983, and since there was no corvette made in 1983, only leftovers from 1982, i would say that the MCSS was the fastest production chevy in 1983)

IROCZTWENTYGR8 -
I have to disagree with you as an owner of both a red 88 IROC-Z 5.7 TPI and a blue 83 Monte Carlo SS. I would say the SS attracts at least three times the attention of the IROC. I have never once had someone come up to me and ask me any questions about the IROC nor try to buy it off of me on the spot. Both of these happen routinely in my SS. The best I can get out of the IROC is someone in a passing car yelling "nice car" or the occasional thimbs up.
Also, when my wife drives the SS, she thinks that guys are always checking her out. She likes driving that car. I don't have the heart to tell her that they are checking out the car.
Finally, I have worked my way through the entire staff at the local NAPA store. When I walk up to the parts counter, they ask which of my three cars I am driving. If I say "SS", the "new guy" always goes out to look. No seems to care about the 'ROC or the Bimmer, but they head for the exits to have a look when the SS arrives.
The reality is that the SS's body style is more rare, in terms of model years (6 versus 11 for f-bodies) and productions numbers year for year and is a more attractive package, IMO.
I think muliple years of ownership of both car has demonstrated this to me.
After saying all of that, I have to admit, my SS is my show car (stock) and my IROC is my go car (mostly stock). I like 'em both!

why do you say in 83' the Monte was faster than the Camaro? the L69 high output 305 was availible with the Z28, and with the camaros lighter weight and optional 5speed trans, i would think a stock 83 Z would beat a stock 83 SS.

Tuned Port - You've got mail! Read the caption at the top of the page from the Motor Trend article that I just sent you.
IROCZTWENTYGR8 - I am only relaying my experiences as a owner of both. I can understand you not wanting to accept it. You can choose to believe it or not. Remember, I alternate which car I drive daily and have done so over a two year period...

KeithO, i never got your email. the L69 engine was a mid-model year option for the Z28. So in the first half year of production, yes, the monte would have been quicker. but once the SS's engine was availible in the Camaro, the monte would lose. If motor trend indeed drag tested both cars equipped with the same engine, and the Z had a 5 speed (i believe it was the only trans offered with the HO motor in the fbody), its possible the SS won because we all know motor trend (and all other so-called performance magazines) sucks at driving stick. they could only get a 13.9 out of a LS1 powered Z! pathetic.

Tuned Port - Is your e-mail address up-to-date on this site? I sent it to Hockey9885@aol.com . Also, your speculation is probably accurate - the article was published in the April 1983 Motor Trend.
IROCZTWENTYGR8 - Yes, you rarely see an SS, and I personally believe that is why I get more of a reaction to my SS than the 'ROC. I see 3rd gens literally every day. I see about one SS a week in the summer and much less than that in the winter... As far as not considering them a muscle car (the recent Monte Carlo excepted), I think an SS is marketed as such... Must be some local variations in opinion, I suppose.

I LOVE the look of the 80's Monte Carlo SS's. They look mean and sleek. I used to own one until it was stolen a few years ago and I have often thought about selling my GTA to buy another Monte and hot rod it.

Yeah but for the money I could my get for my car I could buy a Monte SS and chuck in a little extra money and swap in a 6 speed and Miniram 350, lower it, suspension mods, wider tires, Tell me that wouldn't be the cool!

MCSS head turner
The reason MCSSs get more looks is because people think they are GN's at first glance. And a clean GN (like my friends...SHOW quality) will get lots of looks.

Alot of people like MCSS's better than Camaros as far as looks go. Myself included. 80's Monte Carlos are about my favorite cars in the looks department. They arent *that* much heavier than a third gen f body either.

If you can afford it and have the parking space available, buy an SS and own both an SS and a 3rd gen F-body. You'll find yourself smiling all of the time... BTW - nice GTA.

Man, I'd love to have an SS. My dad used to have one in the 80's. He had to sell it though. I see a lot more F-bodys than SS's which is probably why I'll give an SS a good look if its a nice one.
Oh yeah, I'd take John's SS over a lot of F-body's. LS1 and a 6 speed baby. :hail: :hail:
