Stealth ram help!

Well I put in my Stealth Ram. I got just everything except the commander unit. Got a good deal at a weekend car show/swap. The car will run but won't idle below 1500 RPM. Around 5000 I get a thick black cloud of smoke at WOT. Holley tech said I had to buy commander but read on the boards that the stock ECM would work. Help. What do I need to do to tune this ram?? Engine specs in my sig.
Thanks!!

i would say check out the computer board and see who they all recommed to tune the stock computer. then contact them and get ur ECU tuned asap. i think that that might solve ur problem. but i'm not positive. all i know is the ecu should def be tuned for ur mods and stealth ram.

you'll definitely need to get a chip tuned for that car. check out www.stealthram.com for more info to

Sounds like you have to adjust the TPS/IAC some and you will need a computer chip or you'll have to turn your fuel pressure up so high you are pig rich at idle/cruise to make acceleration and wot "livable"

you have other issues. i had my 383 running on a completely stock 87 ecm and chip. sounds like one or more injectors stuck open. or major vacuum leak. my thought would be the intake gasket slipped. or plenum gaskets didn't seal. another thought would be the MAP sensor. is it plugged in? vacuum line hooked to it?

When I put my stealthram on my 355 with pro heads and comp xe262 cam, it would run with the stock ecm/chip... but had no pumpshot and I got a horrible lean pop and WOT was horribly lean also.

I had to crank the fuel pressure to about 54 PSI to get it happy but it made idle and cruise pig rich.

Cam has alot to do with how it is going to run with the stock calibration.

Are you using any oil? If not you might be able to rule out an internal vacuum leak. WOT black smoke means too much fuel. What is your fuel pressure set at? How is your ignition system?

I barrowed a fuel pressure guage and it was readed 59 PSI at idle. I drove around with it hooked up and around 5000 RPM it shot up to 83 PSI. I am going to try to get a new regulator. Perhaps the one that came with the ram was messed up.

As far as I can tell everything is hooked up right. I dont think its a gasket problem.

did you get the adjustable regulator? if so, the screw the vacuum line attaches to is the adjustment. get it down to 45 psi with vacuum line off. don't forget to sign up over at www.stealthram.com

Make sure your throttle cable isn't hitting the fuel rail on the driver's side. That could explain the high idle.

I got a Holley regulator but havent put it on yet. I noticed a puddle of gas on the engine. I took my hood off and tried to see if I could see anything while driving and ended up having my girlfriend sit in the engine compartment. My girlfriend was watching the injectors as I drove around and says the back 2 spray gas out above 4000 RPM at WOT to the sides.

Yes. She willing to do anything!!

I would like to replace those 2 injectors. Do they have to be a specific brand? They look like stock ones to me but are they rated higher for the ram? Can I reuse the factory TPI ones I have instead of the ones that I got with my ram?

4000rpm at WOT. Was it in gear at the time cuz thats one hell of a ride!!! Sounds like o-rings to me. Make sure you lube them when you put the new injectors in.

Picard, what should you lube the o-rings with when fitting new injectors?

Yep, it was in gear. Tried in 1st 2nd and 3rd. I could not find any leaks with the tranny out of gear.

If there is fuel coming out of the injector bung or fuel rail that means the O-Rings on the injector aren't sealing, not that the injector is bad.

Replace the o-rings and use vasoline on the o rings and they will slide right in without tearing.

BTW you can't just put another injector in, they need to be the same brand/style/ lb per hour rating or it wont fuel like the other 6.

You don't put a big jet on the left and small jet on the right in the secondaries of a carburator!

I put in all 8 of my old injectors and the new regulator. Runs much better now and no gas leaks, but seems to be kind of a black smoke cloud at WOT. I think the injectors I got with the ram might have been clogged, maybe thats why I picked it up so cheap at the swap. Got a mean lope at idle.
