lt1 cam?

alright Ive searched the boards but have not found someone in the same sit. as me. I have an 89 lb9 ta with full exhaust work. Im about to install a fully ported tpi intake setup which is claimed to be able to support a 383. I can get a lt1 cam for 20 bucks, later this summer I want to do either ported heads or just buy new ones and a 2000-2500 stall tq. conv. do yall think this cam swap is efficient or not. most people wanna run the stock heads with the cam or wanna put a tq conv. with the stock cam, Im replacing it all so let me know, thanks guys

your doing what ime doing
i also have 89 lb9 with full exhaust as well

i have both a 97 lt1 cam out of a ws6 and rebuilt 305 081 castings with a valvejob and i will be porting them coming soon

i already have a built trans wih a 2500 converter and 3.73 rear and will be porting my stock tipi for right now

and yes the lt1 cam is a great upgrade for a lb9

stock peanut cam is .350 intake and the lt1 is about .450 which is sweet when you can get one for so cheap

it also idles stock and works well with tpi rpm levels

Same thing I'm doing, except I'm going with an LT1 intake as well. I'll more than likely have 3.73 gears by the end of this week or early next week, and I'll be swapping the cam in when I get the intake. I don't have headers, so you guys will probably feel a bit more of a gain than I, but I do at least have a 3" exhaust. I'm also planning on porting the stock heads, but probably not until the winter when I have a second car, at which point I will get 1.6 rockers, new springs, and a complete 3-angle valve job. A stall converter is also in my plans, but I don't know if I will do that this summer or over the winter (I'm not sure if I'm going to drop a 355 in yet with my 305 heads and LT1 intake).

I'm hoping with this setup to get into 13's, and I don't see why I couldn't assuming I get a set of headers and burn some chips.

i heard from alot of people that the lt1 on the 305 even with the lt1 cam gives up to much torq and goes not give enought up to to warrent the swap

thats why im porting my stock peices for now until i can get some runners and base
but with ported heads it might not be that bad

if you want i will give you the heads off of my car when i change them

I have a LT4 Standard in my 350, It runs very well. I donno how it improved the car since I put it in when I did the 350, and the TPI was installed later. Really strong from 2000-5200 RPM's.

Thats whats kinda got me in a bind.. the LT4 prod cam at 203*/210* is just about the same as an LT1 prod cam at 201*/208*.. and lift is much the same.. and both do really really well in the motors they cam stock in. Personally I think adding one of the cams to a 305, as most people are doing and say to do these days, is going to do what I felt my old L98 cam did.. put the powerband way to high up in the RPM range. The ol' l03 was still pulling good at 6k when I really had no business there, especially not with a street car... and not considering the seemingly known fact that TPI isnt ment for high RPM.

But as always.. just my opinions
