Code 51 help needed
Well all most didn't make it back home. Stock formula 350 1989. I pulled the code and it is 51. I have no clue how to even start to fix. Car seems to run fine now but when that code 51 went off it wouldn't stay running wery long and popped in the exhaust. Exhaust is all new. Any body help.

I found this.
Trouble Code 51 indicates that the ECM sensed a fault in the MEM-CAL. On power-up, the ECM does a checksum of the MEM-CAL to ensure the MEM-CAL integrity is good. If the calculated sum does not match the sum in the MEM-CAL, the ECM will hardcode 51 and enter Back-Up mode, since the ECM cannot know where in the MEM-CAL the fault lies.
Code 51 is set when:
- the actual MEM-CAL checksum does not match the value in the MEM-CAL
Possible causes include:
1) Incorrectly installed MEM-CAL module
2) Defective MEM-CAL module
3) Defective ECM

Stock Prom and never had the EMC out. The car seems to run fine now. But I don't want to take it on the road and get stuck.

Car: red one
Engine: on the floor
Transmission: next to engine
Axle/Gears: the ones that turn
mine had the same thing, and it ended up being the prom.
maybe switch out the ECM, with one known to work, and see if that works.
good luck,
joe

New $77.00 computer installed and problem repaired. It wasn't the PROM chip, it was the computer it self. Hope this helps others on this code 51 problem.
The core for the computer at Advance Auto was $60.00 , which I took the old one with me and had to remove prom chip and side studs as the new one didn't come with these items. Now I can drive my 89 formula 350. GREAT
