How to Change a Thermostat on TPI ???

The intake plenium is directly above the thermostat housing, what is the trick to getting the housing off to change the thermostat, or what needs to come off in order to do so? Thanks
91 Corvette with TPI.

That's how it was looking when I checked it out too, but I wanted to get a second opinion before ripping it apart. Thanks bud.

Re: How to Change a Thermostat on TPI ???

you'll most likely have to loosen the bottom bolts on the runners to be able to get the plenum out. If you are lucky and they don't rip you can reuse the runner gaskets. Be sure and check for vacuum leaks at the runners after putting it all back together. This is one reason why so many people dislike the TPI setup.

That may be the case.
I'm trying to remember... I thought on one of mine I had to remove the plenum because the back bolt I couldn't get a socket on to with just taking the throttle body off.

I used a swivel socket on a 3/8 extension to get it off. I do remember that it was kind of pain in the butt to do this but it was doable.

Yea, just the throttle body. - You don't need to touch the plenum. Be careful of some fine vacuum lines hooked up under the throttle body as you pull it off. They are plastic and break easy.

If you've got lots of patience, you can remove the two thermostat housing bolts with a long wrench that has an open end on one side and a box end on the other. I've never tried it with a swivel socket

Yes, just remove the TB, and get a set of those extensions which lock up at about a 5 degree angle from straight.

Re: How to Change a Thermostat on TPI ???

A lot of it depends on how recently you've had things apart. Steel bolts in aluminum parts can be a bear to get apart if they haven't been apart recently. If your thermostat housing bolts haven't been out in some time, you may want to take the throttle body and/ plenum off so that you can use a 6 point socket on them. If things have been apart recently, you can probably get away with some combination of wrenches or other tools that don't require pulling the throttle body off.

But... pulling the throttle body off is a 5 minute job, and it almost never tears the gasket. I don't see why you'd want to struggle with the thermostat housing instead of just taking off the throttle body.
