Am I forgetting anything...?

I'm going to put this Cam in my 87 305 TPI: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/CRN-104224/
and do the porting.
Here is a list of parts that I ordered:
Camshaft ^
Valve Stem Seal (16)
Valve Spring (16)
Valve Spring Shim .060" (16)
AFPR
and all the necessary gaskets.
Is there anything else I need (something that is crucial) to do the porting and put the above mentioned cam in?
Also I was searching a lot about head porting. Can anyone tell me how exactly it's done and where can I read about that in more details?

Thanks

If the timing chain has not been replaced, I would replace that at this time as well. Cheap insurance.
For porting are links for more info:

Re: Am I forgetting anything...?

Yep, timing chain should be swapped out.

clean/inspect your lifters. they should be ok but a good check is always good.

Should look into new pushrods too. Get a checker to make sure you have the right length.

What springs are you going with? Whats the shims for? You can get a install height mic to measure the factory install height and setup your springs accordingly. You may not need to shim them up. You probably want to keep stock retainers and locks so the spring needs to be a small diameter spring. Manley 22410's work well for this.

Re: Am I forgetting anything...?

I don't live in US so it's hard to get the parts for cars like mine.
So I buy most parts from ROCKAUTO but I can buy from several other websites as well that accept credit card from my country.

The only push rods that are there are:
SEALED POWER Part # RP3262
7.192" O.A.L. (Size: Standard)
Should I get these? And how many? Are they absolutely necessary?

These are the valve springs that I bought:
SEALED POWER Part # VS677
Loc. Int. & Exh.; Incl. damper; 2.03" Free Height

These are the vavle spring shims that I ordered:
SEALED POWER Part # 259203A Valve Spring Insert
.060"

I'll inspect and clean the lifters as you advised. If I'm doing anything wrong or stupid please say it :-))) I'm inexperienced in all of this...and there is not even a single person in my country that knows anything about these engines.

I really appreciate your help.

Re: Am I forgetting anything...?

To be honest, i dont think thats going to be enough spring for that cam. Those are a basic single spring for stock replacement mild cam motors. 76lb seat pressure, 194 open! I'd rather see closer to 110-120 seat pressure and 300 open!

Rock auto does sell the VS739R which is basically the heavy duty stock valvespring type found on the TPI corvettes and late model L98 cars. If you have to use these springs, thats the one I'd get. 104lb seat/277 open. It will work better with the cam but its still alittle short on pressures for my tastes.

Pushrods you have to measure the length needed and order that length. 5/16" diameter, .080" wall thickness is good place to start. Now if this is just a stock LB9 with cam only, then you may beable to use stock replacement pushrods. Just measure your stock length.

I would not touch the heads if you dont know how to port things. If you take the heads off, you will need to use the same gasket thickness or else you may need to change pushrod length.

If you mill the heads down at all, you will need to check pushrod length.

Re: Am I forgetting anything...?

Ok. I'm not touching the heads then
As for the springs. What will happen if I put those in? And which one do you recommend and how much would a set of 16 cost?
The engine IS STOCK :-))) I'm looking for a 350 block...and meanwhile I want to have some extra power from it.
Also should I use the .060in shims that I ordered?

Sorry for the abundance of noobish questions :-S

Re: Am I forgetting anything...?

I just read your edited post. Which springs would you consider "enough" for my cam? :-)))

Re: Am I forgetting anything...?

If you use the current springs you will risk having valvefloat problems as you rev up. That cam will want to go to near 6K rpm on a 305, and if you dont have the valvespring pressure to control the valves, they could start floating, meaning the valvespring has lost control of the valve and the valve is not being shut properly or opened properly. They will open before the cam tells it to open, and sometimes open up farther than the cam lobe specifies, meaning that .465" lift could be as high as .500! This could lead to the pistons hitting the valves and ultimately, engine failure. Its not a good situation.

There are alot of springs that can do the job, its just how much do you want to spend and who will ship overseas to Georgia.

manley springs # 22410 is a popular spring. they are 82 bucks a set of 16. Need to be installed at 1.75" height. Not sure what the stock height is, it may be 1.7 it may be 1.75. You really should measure with a valvespring micrometer. Those run $40 US dollars.

Comp cams 983's would work. About 65 bucks a set of 16. 105lbs seat pressure but 310 open so that should be enough for that cam. Its for a 1.70" install height.

Trick flow makes the TFS-31400413, its a single spring, 40 bucks a set. Kinda cheap. It could work ok.

Out of all of them, I like the Manley springs the best. It will insure spring control.

Re: Am I forgetting anything...?

You frightened me enough... I have to buy another set of springs I guess.
Is there any way of finding out the stock height without taking the engine apart? The parts will be here in about 2 weeks and that's when I'll start taking it apart. Before that I won't be able to measure anything :-S And even if I did, I really doubt the tool for measuring could be found here.
I usually ship everything to a cargo company in MN, 55120, and that company ships everything to Georgia. Otherwise it's nearly impossible...
