You should never always leave it in OD because it will destroy the transmission. I always leave it in D until I hit 50mph then shift it to OD...this is on the street only.

For racing, you should run in D. That is the gear that you make the most power in. It is your 1:1 gear.

I have a new Automatic TCI tranny in my firebird and you can manually shift it using the gear shifter. You can hold it as long as you want in whichever gear your are in. I dont remember if you can do that in the stock tranny or not. If i remember correctly you can but maybe not.
What I will do is start in 1 gear and mash the pedal to about 5000 rpm then push it one click forward to 2 and so on until i've won or ran out of road. The shifting all depends on what your torque and horsepower band is and how your car is setup. Try doing that and see what happens.
It probably isnt too good for the tranny and make sure you dont hold the button in while you do that. If you do you could shift into reverse and its over. They win ha aha!

I have ran both ways...manually shifting and letting it shift automatically like it was designed to do, and I ran my best times by allowing it to automatically shift. Manually shifting slowed me by .2 in the end.

your tranny must be setup a lot better than mine is, i had to ditch the computer shift points and go with a vaccum regulated shifting, i dont like it at all it shifts way low like at 3500 which is sucky. So when i manually shift it works better, but youre right the timeslip tells the tale

Mine was shifting low like that too and it turned out that my TV Cable wasn't properly adjusted. After adjusting it, the car now shifts at between 5000 and 5200 when racing.

Your shifting should depend on when youre making the power. It all depends on your setup. I have a 350 TPI and it pretty much starts a large downhill trend after 5000 rpm so i shift at that point. Your valvetrain pretty much dictates at what rpm your motor can run up too. The beefier and more efficient the valvetrain the higher rpms you can run. For a stock motor i'm guessing you could probably go to 5500 to 6000 with out major damage but i think it would be pointless because by then you wouldn't be making anymore power. Tell me what combo you have and maybe i could find some dyno tests that show similar results.

ok its a stock bottom end 305, i dont know what heads but lets say stock for the hell of it i know theres some work to them tho like lighly ported and stuff.and then performer intake and 600cfm edelbrock carb. th700r4 trans with shift kit. 3.73's in the rear.
im gonna guess 4500 is just fine.
i took it for a top end speed once and it went to 4500 and didnt want to go any further
then i did a massive brake torque in 1st and i forgot to shift to 2nd and i looked down and my rpms where at 4500 before i knew it and i let off the brake and pussed into second and kept spinning down the street til i let off the gas. which was about 40 yards long. could have went further i think but there was a turn i had to take infront of me.

hey check out my sig link go to rides then gm cars then scroll to the bottom and look under brians 84 camaro. it list my mods and pics of my car.

i also dont like od but i have to use it all the time because of my 3.73's in the rear end. if im crusing at 45 in d my rpms will be too high for my pleasur. and ill just be wasting gas. so i use od all the time except when racing or passing someone. if i have to pass its usually because the person is going like 5 under or more. and i will throw it into 2nd from going anywhere from 40mph or slower and punch it then shift it manually into d(3rd) to finish it off. then throw it back into od to cruse
