Re: 700R4 Question

The VIN only encodes the engine, not the transmission. If your car had an automatic after 1984, and it's not a TTA, then it has a 700R4.

Re: 700R4 Question

If it's a 4 speed, yes. The 700R4 was available earlier, but after about 1984 there were no other automatics available, except in the TTA.

Re: 700R4 Question

Thanks that makes me feel alittle better lol, I took it in to a transmission guy to ahve it looked and he said it wasnt a 700R4, I tought he might be full of it cause when I asked a buddy o mine, his pops has been a mechanic for well over 34 yrs, said that I sould becareful alot of times self owned bussiness like the one I went to will swap out the 700R4 cause they are "bullet proof" transmissions. I said I would get a second opinion. Havnt gone anywhere yet, but got to thinking if there was a way I could be sure it was a 700R4. casting numbers ext... Thanks again! -Rev

Re: 700R4 Question

The 700R4 actually has a reputation of being anything but bulletproof.

Check the shape of the transmission pan to identify it:

Re: 700R4 Question

Really what kinda of problems are they related to... I always got the impression from most of my thirdgen comrades back home that they were solid and "bullet proof" lol. Well thanks Ill go n take a look under the car in the mornin see what im workin for... This might sound kinda dumb but know what kinda trans fluid it uses? Everyone I talk to says somethin diff... Also I have a buddy with a 87' 4spd a/t and was wonderin did they also come with the 700R4 or did that only come with the V8's-Rev

Re: 700R4 Question

All the 4 speed automatics are 700R4s, except in the TTA.

Re: 700R4 Question

if your runnin stock setup and you drive your car good then itll last a long time. but the same goes for any trans.

in like 91, they changed the name of the 700r4 to a 4l60, then came out with the 4l60e. if you go to a trans shop, very rarely will they sell you a 700-r4 part, it will be a 4l60 part. so if the guy meant it was a 4l60, he would be wrong, but not far off.

but nevertheless...if he cant identify a 700r4, and wont believe you when you tell him...then he's useless and you should find a smarter trans shop.
