T-5 trouble

A few months ago my tranny went and i got a used tranny from the guy i bought my car from. He sold it to me for $350. When i got er in my car it wouldnt stay in first gear. I would put it in 1st and when i let go of the clutch it would grind and pop out. Would this be the syncro? He says hes getting another t-5 he picked up but hes busy with harvest right now. so if he doesnt get this other tranny can u get a machine shop or a transmission shop to fix the it? and how much would it cost apprx?

Re: T-5 trouble

mine has the same problem.. and my new clutch is slipping already... it only have about 1,000 miles on it... But mine is a bitch when it pops out. I'm gonna take it to a tranny shop when i get a chance.

Yes. Popping out of gear means the locks in the syncrho hub are probably broken. Total rebuild time. Rebuilding a T5 yourself is about as easy as rebuilding a Holley carb. There is really no skill involved at all, very straightforward. I did one in a couple hours. I would sooner buy another used T5 that is known good than take it to a trans shop. You will end up with a huge bill, not worth it.

Re: T-5 trouble

Depends. You need to tear down to determine what broke. You may have a worn synchro slider/hub, such that the locking tangs just aren't grabbing anymore, or the springs in the hub may have fallen out (this happened to mine). Your gear is probably damaged from popping out, so you will most likely need a new gear. Any good trans parts warehouse will have new T5 gears and hard parts. I dealt with Spencer Hodes at Transmission Exchange Company (google it) a lot, but any real trans parts warehouse will have what you need. If you were local I could throw the trans together pretty quickly, especially now that I have a shop press in my garage. The T5 is lightweight and the parts are small and easy to deal with.

What year is the trans? I need to know if it is world class or not. I have a parts manual and rebuild instructions I can send you. I also should have a full parts listing w/ #s so I can tell you what part #s you most likely need to buy, in addition to a master rebuild kit (synchros, bearings, seals. They are not at all expensive)

Re: T-5 trouble

A manaul transmission can't slip. Either the gears are meshed and the synchro is locked, or not. The bad 1st has nothing to do with your clutch slipping.
