700R4 Problem

Hey, Got a question about the 700r4 that i have. I got it out of a junkyard and put it behind a built 350 in my 85camaro. It seems to be completely unpredictable. When I put it in reverse, It engages hard, and it'll go right away. When I put it in drive, it pauses before it engages and when it does it's not near the force as the reverse. Then it upshifts erractically. Sometimes it'll go to 4000 and almost too high, i have to get off the throttle for it too shift, and other times it'll shift at 2500rpm at WOT, and that sucks. I was reading another post and i have had the little greenthing on the TV cable not at the end of the wire, could a sticking TV cable be the cause of this. I have a B&M shift kit out in the garage that I haven't installed yet, would this help???

Thanks

Was this the message you were reading?

Sounds like yeah, that's a sticking TV cable. The cable could either be worn out internally, or the linkage inside the trans is worn out. You could replace the cable, and if the new one sticks, go after the linkage. The TV linkage isn't that bad to get at; you'd just have to drop the pan down. It's "next to" the valve body, on the passenger side, and should be held in with 3 bolts, if I remember correctly.

Search down a bit for the "changing the TV cable" message... good luck, & let us know how it goes!

--Oh, the shift kit won't help the TV get unstuck. You do have do drop the valvebody to install the kit, it's possible that by removing the valvebody (which requires you to remove the TV linkage), that you'd unstick the TV. But if that doesn't happen, you're just adding another "unknown" to the problem.

Not to sound like a jerk, but the fact that is came from a junkyard is part of the problem. A) you don't know what the bozo before you did to the tranny B) most junkyards don't give a crap what happens to the tranny, as long as there is a demand for them. It probably got dropped, kicked around in the dirt, full of water, and who knows what else.

If it were my car, I would make sure the TV cable is OK, if in doubt, replace it. Then I would take a good look at the governer. If the tranny sat out for awhile, the governer may have become rusted up and it may be sticking. I would pull it out and carefully inspect. If in doubt, replace it.

If that doesn't fix it, I would drop the valvebody for analysis.

replace the TV cable first. i'm not kidding. these things cause a lot of problems because they all look good from the outside. but the problem is on the inside.

I recently installed one of the B & M kits in a 700R4 and learned the HARD way that there is one thing they forgot to mention. there is a fluid pressure drain-back hole in the front pump that is only 1/8". with the increased pressure created w/ the kit, you need to increase the hole size to 1/4" or you will blow front main seals (pulled tranny 5 times before I figured this one out)
good luck!!!

Thanks guys. I'm gonna invest in a new TV cable and see where that gets me. I'm 99% sure thats the problem because I can't even adjust it, the ratcheting mechanism does nothing when I try to adjust it... Is that true about the B&M kits??? Will enlarging that hole hurt anything??? Thanks...

Oh, and GM...

I trust this junkyard and I feel relatively safe when I watch them remove it from the vehicle. A 1987-88 Astro van in this case. And when I pulled the pan the fluid looked good.

Tigger, 1/4" is huge! Are you sure about that? I've had the B&M Shift Improver kit in my trans since 1997, and haven't blown a front seal yet.

Chrome, the trans could've been majorly abused by that AstroVan driver..

Yeah, I was considering taking it back and swapping it for another one. They said they'd do that if it was in bad shape. I'll have to see how it's like when I replace the TV cable. Thats the only bad part about getting one at a junkyard, you don't know how hard the previous owner was on the tranny...
