O.K. tranny GURUs , here's one for you . can one do a transmission flush at home ? i have access to a lift , i did a search could not find out . does it require special equip. ? i suppose so , but surely someone here has figured out how to do it . maybe i should just be happy with fluid and filter change . Re: 700r4 flush ???

yes you can, heres what you need to get. Go to a junkyard and find a gm car with the same style cooler line like yours, there is a smaller fitting and a bigger fitting, then the quick connect style, your camaro should have the smaller threaded style going into the rad. Anyways, unscrew that and cut the hose about a half foot from the fitting or whatever you want.

When you get home and drop the pan and service the filter and put the pan back on and let the car down.... Fill the tranny up with 4 qts of fluid, unscrew the TOP cooler line to the radiator (at the rad.) and screw on that piece you stole, i mean, bought, from the junkyard and put a section of like, 4-5 ft of rubber hose from it into a bucket, then the line that is unscrewed put a hose over it the same length into a bucket also.

Now get alot of tranny fluid ready and fire your car up and run out to the front, fluid should be squirting out of one of the hoses....IF it is how it was from the factory, it should come out the one from the radiator side, which is what you want since its flushing the cooler too that way..

anyways, if no tranny fluid is leaking and spraying anywhere but the end of the hose, go ahead and start dumping fluid in pretty fast through the dipstick tube.

Watch the color of fluid comming out of the hose in the bucket, usually, it will take about 12 qts to get it pretty red/pink.

After 12 qts or whenever it looks good, quit filling it up and wait untill it shoots air out of the line and shut it off real fast.

After that, simply hook the lines back up. and fill the tranny up with 4 more qts and fire it up, moving the shifter from rev-and forward gears fast to get it circulated through everything and check the fluid to see if its on the dipstick, if so take it for a quick spin and bring it back and check again. 90 percent of the time 4 qts is perfect, every once in a while u have one that holds a tiny bit more and takes 5 qts to fill it.

Thats it, GOOD LUCK.

And F*CK flush machines. I work at a tranny shop and thats how we do it. I know it sounds backwoods and im sure thats not what people would want to see, but it works and we dont need a 2K machine to do the exact same thing!

Re: 700r4 flush ???

Yes, you can at about 1/4 the price. Replace the filter and pan gasket, add 5 quarts to the pan fill, remove the "top" line at the transmission and put it in a large bucket so you can watch the fluid going into it. Have 7 quarts of fluid opened (you might need more), and a funnel in the dipstick tube. Have someone start the motor in park and leave it at idle, and you add fluid as fast as possible. Now watch the fluid going into the bucket, and once it changes to the new color, stop the motor, attach the transmission line back to the transmission, and check the fluid level, and add any if necessary. Now you have done a 98-99% fluid change.

Re: 700r4 flush ???

According to all the posts I find in this forum with the search, they say to use the bottom line at the tranny.

Also, what hose size is everyone using to slide onto the tranny line and run into a bucket? Like 3/8?

I'm hoping to do this tonight, thanks!

Re: 700r4 flush ???

Read my post agian, dont mess with the line on the tranny, your just making your job extra hard. Like i said, top hose at rad.. it will come out the RAD side. Go to junkyard and get a cooler line fitting, like i also said, they generally use 2 fittings, a large and small. Get the same one you have, just eye ball it because its not hard to tell them apart.

Re: 700r4 flush ???

I have a different setup as far as aftermarket tranny coolers and filters and such than a stock car so your method does not apply to me. That's why I'm doing it differently. Besides, the car is already jacked up to change the filter so it's not any extra work.

Re: 700r4 flush ???

Wouldn't it be better to flush the tranny fluid before you change the filter? Other wise after the filter is changed aren't you running dirty fluid through it for no reason?

No because the fluid in the pan is sucked through the filter into the transmission, into the TQ converter, out into the lines, into the tranny cooler then back into the pan. By changing the pan fluid and filter first you are allowing for there to be clean fluid behind the bad fluid.

Re: 700r4 flush ???

oh i see, im supposed to automatically know what you have in your setup

Sounds like your the only one who will know what size line you need. if its not stock, how do we know what you need.

And i still stick with my previous statement, do it at the end of the radiator, or cooler, whicever you have last in line, you want to get the fluid comming out of those, not the tranny, so you will flush them too. IF its easier to get at where it plugs into the tranny at, then so be it.

Dude, chill. I'm my question I said I'd be using the hard return line into the transmission which is going to be the same size fitting on ANY car with a 4L60 regardless of what I have setup. I was simply asking if anyone knew what size hose would fit around the flange on the stock return hard line.

I went with 3/8 from the auto parts store, I'll be doing the flush tomorrow night.
