Need T5 VSS part # please

Hi all,

I'm just about done installing the aftermarket T56 in my car, which was an automatic. The T56 uses a T5 vehicle speed sensor, and I'm having a hard time finding one. The hole for the sending unit is about 1" in diameter - you can see it here (A).

http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com/images/bwt5610.gif

All of the parts places around here have a vss that is 2" in diameter, none have the smaller one. My GM parts catalog lists 3 different numbers, and I do not know which is correct.

Can somebody please tell me which vss I need, and provide me with a part number?

Thanks!

Just go to the auto wreckers and pull one off a V6 or V8 Firebird, there both the same just make sure the car is 89 and down because i think the newer ones are different.

Also you could just go to an Autozone or other friendly parts dealer and talk them into ordering all of the VSS part nos and you buy the one that you need.. That is what I did during my tranny swap.

Since when does a T56 use a T5 speedo sensor?

The aftermarket T56 uses one. It is supposed to be easier to swap into a thirdgen, but I can't find the vss anywhere so I don't know how much easier it is. I ordered one from Autozone, hopefully it will fit. I can't believe none of the parts stores in my area stock a T5 vss!

Would I be able to replace a mechanical speedo gear in a T5 with the VSS and have it work? Everywhere I go/ask says no... Except one but it was a speed shop that mentioned doing one with like a ~$110 adapter... The one in my automatic is big, while the mechanical deally in the T5 is small...

You ought to be able to do that. You'd just need the VSS and speedo gear for it.

I received the correct vss from autozone.com today:

Wells part # SU1013

GM part # 25007345

The hold down bracket for this vss is
GM part # 12479577

Just in case anyone else is ever looking for this info.

How much were they? And how big is the VSS? Should that be all I need is just the VSS/Bracket?

Thanks

Jess, the VSS is about 1" in diameter. It should be the one you need if your unit has the smaller hole. It was $55 at Autozone. I bought the bracket from gmpartsdirect.com, but you should be able to order it from any dealer, it was really cheap. You could probably make one if you wanted to.

All I have to do now is go to the dealer and get a gear for the vss. I may end up using the dakota digital box to calibrate my speedometer later on.

Thanks for the part #! It works almost perfect, just reads a bit slow.
