700r4 speedo gear housing question.. Please help

Hi, I have an 89 camaro with a 700r4. The problem I am having is with the speedo gear housing. This is the part that sticks out the back of the tailshaft in which the speedo cable plugs into. The problem I am having is with the gear housing itself. It seems that the threads in which the cable screws into, have broke off the gear housing completely. Basically, I can pull the cable of and slid it back on, without unscrewing it. My questions has to do with the leak i believe its causing. Would the trans leak from this area, if the threads cracked?

Thanks

Paul

Is the housing broken or are you missing the retainer that secures the housing in place? Yes, it would leak if not secure.

Its just the threads. Where the speedo cable screws into. Right where the threads meet the housing. Looks like ill be replacing the speedo gear housing. Anybody know where i can get this part?

I just noticed my sons is broke off as well, the threads are still in the cable. Its the black plastic housing that broke that the speedometer screws into and his car had 15" wheels from the factory and still has original rims on it now. I have no idea whether to get the one for 35-39 or the other one but I am guessing its going to be the 35-39 but wanted to be sure

Third gens got both. If you're not changing tire size nor gear ratio, pull the old one out and count the speedo gear teeth.

Or post up rear ratio and tire size help. Wheel size doesn't tell much.

Re: 700r4 speedo gear housing question.. Please help

guess thats what I will have to do. I was hoping it was one or the other so I could go ahead and order it before I took the other one out, but guess thats not going to happen. This thing has been a real headache. We got the motor and transmission in then had problems with the transmission lines fitting correctly (I am guessing they got bent when they were in the garage by someone stepping on them) and as soon as we got that fixed I find this dern thing broken off. We still have to hook up the exhaust and driveshaft but I thought that was the last of it, guess not, guess it will be sitting until I can get which ever one of them I need (definitely going to get a metal one instead of plastic) before he will get to drive it with the new engine in it. Thanks for the reply

Edit: I don't know what the gear ratio is, it is just the stock rear end that came in the 89 camaro RS (just like mine) that came factory with a 5.0 in it
