Re: bad tranny???

sounds a lot more like a rear end problem-spider pin
came out, tooth came off a gear ETC.. Check the color of
oil;red-tranny, yellow-rear.
BTW did the same thing with my '69 camaro-had a
burnout going at full throttle-when the rear blew and
locked, pinion snout twisted off-spit the driveshaft out
from under, blew the caps and rings off the rear wheels

Re: bad tranny???

jack up the car and support the rear on jack stands, start the car and place in a gear( reverse, drive) and see if the drive shaft spins and not the tires or does the drive shaft not spin. This way you will see if it is the rear or the trans.

Re: bad tranny???

I'm not trying to be a jerk here, just making a point.

I just don't quite understand why folks can't afford to fix these cars, but they can afford tires for all these burnouts all the time. Where exactly is it written that a 3rd gen F-Body was ever designed to do burnouts? Squealing tires is only ever impressive when the rear wheels spin from having more motor than traction - if brakes have to be used to spin wheels, then what's the point? That can be accomplished on anything from a Cadillac to a deisel truck to a 1960's VW Bettle.

I mean folks - let's come to reality and face facts ...

1) no 3rd gen ever had more than what - 245hp from factory?
2) 3rd gen's got 200R4, 700R4, or T-5 - these are undoubtedly the weakest (factory) tranny's GM ever put on a car (up to this time)
3) 10 bolts (or even the 9 bolt), again the weakest rearend up to this time

The cars look good, everyone always loved them. But they were never ever intended to be any kind of mean street machine - they were developed and marketed to teens - designed to look cool, but keep stupid 16-18 year olds alive. And they only look good rolling. Until you tear them down and rebuild them better than designed, the only thing you get by forcing the car to do something it wasn't designed for... is a pile of broken parts.

Re: bad tranny???

you need to find out where the oil is coming from..
That would suck if you do have something broke in the
drivetrain AND a blown engine
If engine is blown, probably already had something
wrong with it or you did the burnout with cold oil-
should always have the engine up to operating temp
before running it under a heavy load
Car looks really nice in the photo, well worth spending
some money on-nevermind what the car is"supposed"
to be worth

Re: bad tranny???

really need to get under and have a look to be sure...
when i blew the rearend in my '69(in 1987)i was
also a teenager on a fast food wage-a junked '72
nova provided the replacement
what is kind of a mystery is that after the incident, the
engine was still running(was it running ok,not rough
or with a miss?)then afterward would not start...
-There is a possibility of a broken flexplate, sometimes
they will crack out around the crank flange-usually
this is caused by loose bellhousing bolts or other
missalignment between the engine and tranny...
Tell us what you find

Re: bad tranny???

Yes it was still running smooth and ok. And after I turned it off it just kinda grinds/klunks when I try to start it.. Is there a belt in the bell housing? Cuz I found pieces of a belt after the incident while looking around the scene and atleast trying to somewht admire my posi marks.lol. And obviously its not the serpintine belt cuz it was running and I also checked.. my wheels are still locked up while in park I tried turning them while the rearend was jacked up.. so that means my rearend is okay right?.. I appreciate the help a lot! I really wamma get this car in good running and driving condition over winter. Planned in hving this as a daily driver excet in the winter. Trying to get a truck also....lol.

Re: bad tranny???

If you don't already have one get a chilton manual available at any parts store (better than haynes) get the car in the air on jack stands and find out what have fluid leaking out of it and where. Report back and we will help as we can.
