is my T5 shot???(long background)PLZ HELP

Hey guys i bought my T/A with a 305 and a t5 tranny. This past thursday my tranny went. or so we think. in june we put a new clutch in. Now ive had a few mechanics tell me that there was a bleeder valve on the slave cylinder to release the pressure off the the new clutch when we put it in, we didnt do that.

Fast forward to december no major probloms with the tranny until last monday when it started grinding when i would put it into 4th gear. it wouldnt do it in any other gear though. So i gave it to my mechanic buddy and he looked at it and said he pulled a chunk of metal out the size of a marble.

Now i have only 4th gear to drive in and i can put it into gear without having to use the clutch, but it doesnt grab, it doesnt grind whine or make a sound while its ideling. my dad thinks the clutch might have burnt out since we didnt bleed it when we put it in. Any ideas? Is my t5 shot???

If you didn't bleed the clutch it would not disengage so you would not be able to shift(easily). I don't think that is your problem at all. Sounds like you broke the input shaft, or possibly one of the slider forks. Either way, yeah, its shot. Need to remove and tear it down to properly diagnose and fix that.

Where did he pull the chunk of metal from, and do you happen to have a pic of it?

ok so i found the rebuild kit at the gear box but which is better heavy duty Koyo & Torrington Hi Cap bearings or facetory tremec/Borg Warner factory. Also the case should be alright right?

Re: is my T5 shot???(long background)PLZ HELP

you need to open it up and see whats broke.. as for the clutch they are idiots once the air is out of the system no need to open a bleeder unless you want to flush the fluid. (not bad idea but not to " releasing pressure " )

so your car used to grind 4th gear and now it wont shift? im a little lost what does it do specifically? stuck in 4th no matter where you move the shifter? or do you mean you have the rest of the gears and no 4th ?

because you said you only have 4th to drive in but it wont move or do anything..(this is where i got lost)

Re: is my T5 shot???(long background)PLZ HELP

hey sorry out of all the gears including reverse the only gear that i can get to engage is 4th

1st 2nd 3rd 5th reverse=gone...when i put it in first it feels empty like there is no gear there and it doenst move. The case is the same for the rest of the gears.

my mechanic friend told me that the guy that had it before must have skipped 4th gear and gone straight to 5th.

Re: is my T5 shot???(long background)PLZ HELP

I don't see how that would result in only 4th gear working. I know in my friend's 89 when his T5 went south he only had 4th gear as well. Turns out he bent the input shaft while powershifting one day. Don't remember why he was powershifting into 4th, but he can be hard on cars.

Can you shift into Neutral? Or is it stuck in 4th all the time?

I think its best to pull the trans and see whats up. you may have just messed up the shift fork setup. but taking the gear teeth off the input shaft will result in only 4th as well (one would think you would hear some noise)
