Speedometer Drive Gear

Speedometer Drive Gear
My T5 has a RED drive gear but it only has 7 teeth on it (not 9). Everything I've read on here says that the RED gear has 9 teeth.
Am I missing something here?

Re: Speedometer Drive Gear
My speedo is still off (too fast) even though I did the calculations correctly ( I thought).
Dumb question: How many teeth are on my drive gear shown in the pic above ? 7 or 8?

Re: Speedometer Drive Gear
The one in the pic above is the actual one that I have. It seems as if you can count 7 0r 8 depending on if you include the smaller ones on the sides.
How many would you say I have?

Look at the END of it.
Count the teeth as they come to the end.
Not that hard.
Looks like a 9-tooth (2 series) to me.

It is a WC T-5 - I don't know from what year though.
I can't look at it from the side anymore because the trans is installed now.
I am taking other opinions on how many teeth are there.

Re: Speedometer Drive Gear
The GM T5 drive gears come in 7 (Blue) and 9 (Red) only. You count the thread starts (or points) on the side to determine tooth count. It's called a "multi start thread".
I have both gears in stock and just took this pic with both a 7 and a 9 side by side. You can easily see the difference.

Re: Speedometer Drive Gear
I have NEVER IN ALL MY DAYS seen a 7-tooth red gear.
Every 7-tooth one, WITHOUT EXCEPTION, that I have ever seen, has been blue. I have personally thrown several 9-tooth red ones in the trash that came to me in T-5 cores, because I have less than zero use for such ... trash. I don't need it cluttering my space and getting in the way of stuff I actually DO have a use for.
Wouldn't be the first time something that GM (or any other mfr for that matter) has published has been incomplete or just plain WRONG. Probably won't be the last.
The experience of LOOKING AT PARTS sometimes has to be believed over what's printed, even in the FSM.
Since the gear in the pic shows 4 complete teeth in the part that can be seen, which is somewhat less than half of the gear, it is entirely reasonable to conclude that it has somewhat more than twice as many as 4 teeth. 9 is COMPLETELY consistent with this logic. 7 is not.
If your gear is red, it's a 9-tooth.
