this only applies to vehicles with a 2.8 and a 1227302 ecm.i have a copy of the factory s/d update if you would like this bin email me. if you do not have prom burning equipment i will gladly do this for a very small fee.i also have an original s/d update chip from a well known chip tunner i have yet to investigate it just yet but i will post details as soon as i can.

I've got a 2.8 with the 1227302. Is this the different PROM/.bin so that the engine doesn't need the MAF? Uses MAP instead? I guess what I should be asking is what are the differences between the stock 1227302 PROM and this factory s/d update? I would be interested in giving it a try, I understand at one point that on the TPI v8's, GM engineers discovered getting rid of the MAF gave a few extra horse...

Also, I am sorry I am going to ask, but:

Speed Density. As far as I've understood, there were so many MAF problems that GM created a "fix" to move the car to MAP. My dad's former '87 Olds 2.8 had this fix. The MAF was left in the intake, but not hooked up. A MAP sensor was added (with a vacuum line) and patched into the MAF signal wire. And finally, the ECM's computer chip was replaced. So instead of someone spending $300 for a new MAF, they'd spend less. MAP sensors are both cheaper and more durable, so it would cut down on the car owner's chance of buying another MAF in a few years.

(You can buy rebuilt MAF's from local auto parts stores, about $100, with a $15 core charge)

Ouch, I've never looked to see how much a MAF costs! Man, I think I'll get that .bin even though I don't have any PROM burning equipment...might even have funstick burn me one, just so that I have it as an option down the road. That and I wouldn't mind playing with getting rid of the MAF anyways.

I have an '87 2.8 with MAF of course. Can I install a MAP sensor from lets say an '89 2.8 along with its computer chip and just disconnect/diable my MAF? Are they the same computers?

TomP: With only one PROM burning equipment you could tune/reprog. both cars: Your Firebird and the 87' Olds 2.8.

well like i said i have to investigate this other tunned prom. ive also been waiting on the guy whos owns this car to show up so i can check his wiring to see what going on. ill get some very specificx info soon. hang tight.

89 2.8 will also have a MAF, if it's from an f-body. But yeah, that's what the conversion was on that oldsmobile. Just a chip and a MAP sensor. The original MAF sensor wire was re-used. In the 2.8 Gen II motors with MAF, the MAF also contains the MAT sensor- the MAF uses a 5 pin connector, smaller in size than our MAF's 3pin connector.

On the olds, the MAT was still functional, but the relay giving the power to the MAF was unhooked. The MAP was tapped into the MAF signal and power wires... I think they came right off the relay connector. Those three wires were "added" to the harness, and the MAP was placed on the passenger side firewall.

Denis, I would, but that Oldsmobile is long gone. I do plan on playing with my own PROM, but that'll be after my long list of work-to-do; probably at least a year from now.

PROM burners aren't that expensive, either... do a search on the 'net for 'em, they're not as outrageous as you might think. In my old club, v6fbody.com, the club helped a company develop a prom module for the 4th gen computers. The club members completely bitched about the price! The price was around $300, and what they couldn't see was that the bulk of that cost went to a PROM burner. The actual chip & development of it came out to about $100! But they didn't see that;all they saw was $300 and didn't want to pay- I think they thought they'd get it for $50. That club had some weird people in it... they were all for the PROM programmer until they saw the cost. Then they all backed out; what a mess that turned into!

Thank you Tom, I'm going to check into this further and see if I can find out the exact technique that can be use on an f-body V6. This sound like the hot ticket by bypassing/eliminating the MAF.

I CAN'T STAND COMPUTER CONTROLLED VEHICLES! call me old school.

Here's what I've discovered in my research on the MAP vs. MAF. The MAF actually works better in monitoring the air flow when in tuned with the fuel injection. MAP sensors will cause the motor to run rich with the slightest vacuum drop. This is better on full throttle power but not through the pedal range (Not as efficient). MAF's have come down in price dramatically over the years and are from my sources, said to last longer than the vacuum MAP route where in years past, this wasn't the case- they were very costly.

I'm open for others opinions on this matter, mainly to confirm or dispute whether the info I have compiled is correct.

ive been playing with this bin file and it has booth maf and map support in it. i have to check his wiring out. something is afoot.

ok folks heres the bin. as far as i can tell it looks to have code and tables for a map sensor. i checked over the car that the ecm was in and it was not a s/d car. this eprom came out of a reman ecm. my thoughts are that they enabeled some improved code or this is a later model revision of the code. all i really know for sure is that this 2.8 runs really good. smoother than most. try this bin at yr own risk!!!!!! im looking to do some testing next week on it so then ill be sure exactly how it behaves.still use at yr own risk !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!


ps until i test with a map sensor dont go adding one.
