Kind of in the same pickle as SteveM
Hello again folks! Yep, I kinda have the same "problem" as SteveM. I just got back from 5 months in Iraq and now actually have money. I'm looking to mod what I have now (read: keeping 2.8) and I am open to suggestions. I've been out of touch with what's new so I need your help. I already have a few ideas, I just want to hear what you guys have to offer.
BTW, thirdgen.org was in Car Craft!! (you guys probably already know, but it's new to me!)

I'll say what I say everytime....catback exhaust (2.5", mandrel bent), high flow cat OR cat delete pipe (NO GUTTING!), intake modification (and as much as everyone recommends drop-in K&N filters in a stock intake, I will tell you why I think its pointless. I ran a paper filter at the drag strip. Then I ran NO filter. No filter will flow even better than a K&N obviously, and running without a filter only got me 1/2 a mph at the end of the strip. 1/2 a mph is NOT a big difference, obviously! A major tuneup always helps....TomP is the man for that job. Underdrive pulleys will free up a bit of parasitic power loss, although if your alternator is barely cutting it right now, it definitely won't be up for the job with pulleys on it. Those are the most SIMPLE bang-for-the-buck mods.

I totally missed the Iraq part...glad to see you're back safe. Good job on kicking some @$$....someone had to do it and I'd say we definitely sent in the right guys for the job.

perhaps its just me, but rather then modding the 6 cyl, i would focus my efforts on the rest of the car...... make it handle like nothing else.
put all your money into the engine, and you're going nowhere(pun intended)... make it handle like crazy....
but thats just my opinion...
also, now would be the time to fix the little things that are bugging you, like a broken vent, a burnt out bulb in the dash, tattered sunvisors, ect...

Jurrel...all you need is a length of pipe about the length of the converter, with a 2 1/4 in. diameter (I THINK) at one end, and the diameter of the rest of your exhaust system at the other end..most likely 2 1/2 in. And that would effectively become a 'cat delete pipe'.
A gutted cat is a hollow open chamber... Gases expand rapidly...so the air inside the exhaust pipe, once it hits that open chamber, expands out to fill the chamber. Then it has to be squeezed BACK down into the pipe at the other end. This creates turbulence and backpressure, which reduces exhaust effectiveness.

a fix to that is to take the heat shield off the cat, and put the cat "around" the straight pipe.
a quick glance makes it look like the cats still there, but theres a straight pipe inside...
i saw some guy do that at the HS autoshop in SC.... he was moving to NC where they had visual inspections, but he already had a cat delete...

Yeah....I've seen it done. Just a little extra work. I don't have emissions...no visual, no smog checks..nothing! My car right now has dual exhaust with no cats, dumped under the car, and it runs slightly rich. Muahaha...I love Florida.

Thanks for your support, guys. I looked for the hi-flow cat. Talked to a Jegs tech guy while ordering my 6al, wires, and coil. They don't have anything for the 2.8. I am thinking of gutting the one I have on, but Nixon has a point. I also don't have any emissions to worry about so the "delete pipe" may work.
Speaking of the 6al, any ideas where to put it? It's kinda cramped!
Tom, it's the may issue and they are talking about "Best Bolt-Ons for GM TPI Engines". THose guys might like that.

One more question besides where to put the darn box.... The coil. How do I get the old rivets out without breaking the plastic bracket???

The replacement coil probably has provisions for mounting without any sort of plastic bracket for it...you sure it's plastic and not painted metal? I imagine just use a small drill bit and drill the rivets out very very carefully if it is plastic!

The plastic bracket is holding some other sensor. There is no humanly way possible to get a drill remotely close to them either. The replace ment coil came with screws (hey GM, there's an idea!) to make life easier, but that is after getting the old one out first!

What about a dremel tool? If one's readily available... I've got one and I never use the damn thing..I'd be happy to sell it to ya!

There's an idea!! Someone is bound to have one close. Glad to see someone around here helping. My local boad isn't doing jack! Thanks man!You know just as soon as you sell it, you'll need it. That's the way things work.

Lol...no problem man. And so far, I havent had a single use for it. I still have all the attachments. I even got the nice multi-speed one....during Sears after-Christmas sale I freaked out and bought $200 worth of tools and stuff....lol... Always wanted to use the damn thing but I realized I'm not good at constructing things.
