Who here can hang with an eight?

I was wondering if anyone here has enough horsepower to keep up with V8. I don't mean TBI either. I mean like Mustang GT's and other kinds. And how did you do it? Any way besides turbo or Nitrous Oxide? No swapping either. I'm talking a little 3.1L V6 hooked up so well it can.

AM91_CamaroRS is likely the closest NA... and.. uhm... honestly, a mid 15 isn't really enough to hang with your average 14-14.5 second V8.... so, without a power adder, I'd say you're not likely to find anyone.

Yech is right....You need juicy juice or a trubo/blower. After the cam is in, when sprayin I doubt I'll be able to outrun anything faster than a mid 90's GT . It's ok though, as long as it's faster than Hondas right??

Existing record (to my knowledge) is The_Raven's : 1985 GMC S-15 Jimmy, 3.2L turbocharged, intercooled hybrid 13.873 @ 99.08

That vehicle also had a 3100 series top end mangled onto it...

I'm gunning for The_Raven's setup... I outran a 15.0 Crown Vic fast enough for me to *conservatively* say 12psi put me @ 14.3-14.5, on a bad tune.

Now I'm redesigning the Y pipe, for better flow... and should I mention the roller aluminum headed 3.1 I've got in the works?

i've run 15.1Xs...also, i've beat a couple of 5.0 mustangs at the dragstrip before. they may have had something wrong with them, i don't know...all i know is that i beat them. also, i beat one of the new Dodge Hemi Rams, shortbed. i'm looking for high 14s once i get the 4 barrel carb on it.

edit: also, at the track, my friend's 96 Z28 beats me with like 14.3s...on the street, i run circles around him. my car (and foot adjustments) do a little better traction wise than his so i pull out far enough that he can't catch up before we back out.

P.S. i pulled a new vette Z06 off the line, BAD, at the track. i pulled him about the first half of the first 1/8 mile. The best part is that i have it on video too.

thats why you dont try to race an 8 when your on the street, i have no beef with v8's , if were both thirdgens i make it more of a cruise then a race, but if its a mustang id def try to race him even though i'll lose , lol,

if you can beat a z28, then there's something wrong with your friend... no offense, but I believe they rate those at something like 300hp? more than 2x, and usually a posi rear end...

Unless you have like 4+ rear end, and he has a 2.73 or something.... dunno

96 Z28...rated at 275 hp i believe. he has posi, i do too...i have 3.73 gears, he doesn't. i think i have about 220 or so hp at the crank...only about 50-60 hp less and much better traction can make a huge difference...not to mention the weight differences. at the track, he did beat me fairly bad but on the street, my car will take his...only going up to 60 or 65 mph. at the 1/4 mile, he was running like 95 where i was running 88.

I outran an 88' Z28. It wasnt a driver's race either. He got the jump on me and I reeled him in.

Probably was TBI, but even a stock 305 TBI has more power than my engine. Chalk one up for the 6 banger!

220 on a 3.1??? that almost seems impossible! almost double stock...

shoot, you'd have to turbo the car to get 220 I'd think...

what's your max speed with those gears?

AM91Camaro_rs does it fall flat on the second half of the quarter or are those times from different tracks?

naturally aspirated...i should be pushing 210+, anything is possible. max speed in 3rd gear is right at 100 mph.

yea, it does fall on its face because of a stock TB and a mildly ported intake...once i go carb'd, i'm looking for high 14s.

I hope it gives good gains, I've been wondering about it myself. Although, I just found an old FWD 2.8 intake lying in the shop with the same basic TB (TPS is diff...) I'm thinking of doing the "Starship Enterprise" intake and seeing how that goes. All I need is some Rectangular tubing and some time and I'll make it happen. I just wanna go 15's...maybe 14's with juice.

The "i should" or "i was told i should" or "i think i have" Method of guessing the hp rating of an engine is really not a good idea. I've seen people who thought they had so and so hp numbers and when it came down to the dyno they were VERY wrong.

Also maybe a certain car make model would be more helpful then simply "who can hang with an 8"

I remember my parents old chevy wagon, it was an 8. Had about 5 hp thing was slow as hell.

Then i remember my old mustang. Different story all together , both 8's though

I would say his horsepower estimate is pretty close considering I know for a fact my rear wheel horsepower from before the headers and my times and he should be right about where he says he is at the crank. I know the weight of the cars can't be that different and should be running simmiliar time if he could uncork it in the quarter.

Brobert, i do have a "i was told" in here but, here's how i am figuring my hp. I put my car on a mustang dynamics dyno about 4 or 5 months ago, it showed like 135 hp at the rear wheels, someone told me (here's the, i was told...) to, seriously, add about 50 hp to that number and that is what a dyno jet dynonamometer would show, to the rear wheels. since NASCAR uses dyno jet, i have seen a nextel cup car on a dynojet chassis dyno, i think i will go by dynojet numbers, not mustang dynamics. anyways, 135 + 50= 185. 185 + 15% (loss through drivetrain) = 213. i have changed my computer chip since then, which seemed to help and, that assuming i'm ONLY losing 15% through my auto tranny which seems to be slipping too. or, you could do it one of the other routes, go to a website or program that will give you estimated hp from ET and weight. i've gotten basically the same numbers from 2 or 3 different programs. But, coming up in August, when fl-thirdgen.org has a dyno day...i will be dynoing my car again, on a dynojet this time.

thanks, biff85ta. i'm hoping to be running pretty close to the times you have once i get it to run on top end.

I see, So when are you gonna do the carb swap. Im curious to see what it'll do. I'm sure you'll gain some.

BTW wasnt tryin to sound like an *** in the above post. Its just ive seen people guess some crazy numbers no place near the correct amount

i don't really know when i'll get it swapped to carb but i hope its soon. first thing i need to do is find a 4" cowl hood that i can put on the car with the carb.

i know what you mean about people guessing really high hp numbers that are no where close...i can't stand that kind of stuff so i don't like to guess unless i have a real reason to say a number.

I dont know exactly how high the v6 mani with a carb will be but i still have the stock firebird hood and i have an edelbrock performer rpm mani with a 3/4 inch carb adapter, a large holly carb and a slightly smashed 2 inch air filter. Of course the v8 sits a little lower then the v6 but over all from the bottom of my manifold to the top of the carb is 10 inches irc.

My old V6 hung with an 84 Z28. My best G-Tech 1/4 mile was 16.48 at 85 mph. That was one RAGGED OUT Z28, lemme tell ya. I think it was an L69. What a dog of a motor that was....L69's are normally quite respectable.

I beat a 4 banger exlipse... once... when the guy totally... well... sorta... screw it, he was looking at his radio... damnit..

so what the hell do you need to do to get your car to 185+? hp? is this mostly just cam upgrade? did you stroke it or what? that sounds insane, 67% increase in power from stock.

That 135 sounds right, but damn what did you do? I wouldn't hardly expect that much out of a turbo on a stock motor. (I know you aren't stock)

i have to whole carb setup...it measures about 13.5" where the mpfi setup is about 9-9.5"

well, its more what i don't have done... I have a stock crank and rods and valves, that's about the extent of the stock stuff inside my motor. and i want to knock valves off of the stock list by going to 1.8" intakes. if i was really only making 135, even at the wheels, with all the mods i have, i would cry.

I once beat a lawnmower.

I'm going to "guess" my hp at 110, but that might be a little high.

When i had my 2.8 in the car i beat one of those old big as hell chevy station wagons. I also got beat by a mini van

I had all the smog crap off the engine and i also removed the stock air filter can and replaced it with a cone type filter.
The egr was blocked off and the cat was hollow (i didnt know it was hollow untill the v8 swap)

Overall i thought the 60 v6 sucked, only cool thing was on the highway it was easy to wrap the speedo back around.

Now my car is a different car all together.

I have a 120mph so I don't get that pleasure... and to top it off, my speedo reads 15% low... so if I get it to 120... I'm going way to damn fast.

And... I would never race a minivan, they are ALL faster than our cars, unfortunately... the two vans we have have at least 4.0's in them, and weigh just a tad bit more... so I just cruise like I don't wanna race, saves on gas plus my exhaust still makes me sound like I can be fast if I wanna be...
