The status of my 2.8 and drivetrain : )

Ok guys so here is an update on my 2.8 v6. Got the car in like 2004 and did a lot of work to it planning to drop a v8 in it. Well turns out I gave up and totally went for a mint 02 SS. So the 2.8 became my daily driver. This freaking car is a worrior I must admit. Burnouts after burnouts after "attempted doughnuts" she still idles and runs strong. The gas milege is pretty crappy but still runs fine. Since 2004 I manually shifted my 700r4, I barely ever check the fluids, I might check it tomorrow but I think there's a leak?? ha, I slam those gears and the motor has been pegged past 7,000 rpm, I don't know when it's going to give up. Close to 3 years of manually shifting and downshifting this 700r4, I havent changed the oil in it yet, and the engine.. hell maybe twice since I got it. Car has about 150,000 miles on it, no knocks what so ever, has a slight vaccumm leak (you can tell when it idles) but I drive it like I stole it and I dont know when she'll give up on me. Anyone else have an undestructable 2.8??? haha sorry i was bored.

I beat the Livin **** out of mine and it has yet to give problems but that is at 20,000 miles on the rebuild and about 17,000 on the rebuilt trans. not a peep yet, but i always do the proper mantinance on it(to easy to not do it when you work at a shop even if it is just walmart). highest i have taken mine is 6000 but i rarely take it over 4500 seeing as it runs out of breath right about there. I only went to 6000 cause i have the 2-3 shift crap where it wond shift if your any past 1/3 throttle, happened when i didnt know it would do that and the RPMs just kept going up and up till i finaly chickend out and let off. Its weird tho cause it wont shift from 2-3 but i have no problem with the 3-4 shift if im at 3000 or less it will drop down to third but once im over 3000 i can mash it to the floor and it just keeps going.

haha yeah I know what you mean.. my trans does the same thing, if I floor it I have to let off in order for it to shift. And my 3rd gear to o.d sometimes goes in gear and out.. like 3-4-3-4 something with the tv cable but screw it . I'm having second thoughts though.. i have a 350 bare block fully cleaned up ready for a build... No one wants to buy it so I might get the cheapest most reliable parts and build it.. Then continue to beat the **** out of the rs with some power. gees I'd need tires more often then though : ( .

My 2.8 was seeming pretty indestructable. 194k and still had good gas mileage. Was getting a bit noisy though. Hit 7k once when I thought I was going from D to OD, but was actually in OD and went to N.

Also survived 2 years in Germany on the autobahn and hills everwhere too.

Anyway, now I have a mildly built 3.4 with a new 700r4 (v8 internals). It should last me for a looooong time. Assuming I didn't mess it up too bad recently. (see my most recent thread)

I don't know what I'll do with the 2.8 now though. Maybe keep an eye out for a cheap or free 3rd gen in need of a v6, or perhaps one hell of a go-cart.

260,000 miles on original man. trans and engine. Never been apart and I still have 190 PSI of compression all the way around, 17 in. vacuum, and get 30+ mpg on the freeway.

I don't baby it either, I get on the reeway shifting at 5K everytime and do it when it's been running for about 30 seconds...no babies here.

i run mine pretty hard too. i love my 2.8... but i'm going to toss a 350 into my daily driver and toss the 2.8 into a roller so that i can drive it a little while i fix it and work on it... i plan on getting a beaten up car and fixing it, but i want it to run a little.

this is why i dont understand how these engines have such a bad rap. they seem to be able to take just as much as any other enging if not more.

I thought the 2.8 in my 86 firebird was indestructible too..... until I bent a valve in it at 180,000 miles
