89 camaro 2.8 v6 exhaust options

Hi, i'm new to all this but i have a 89 camaro that i'm looking to having something done to the exhaust, everything is stock, I know nothing about this kind of stuff but i was wondering if just putting a magnaflow muffler and some glasspacks on it, sound good? would it make a good sounding difference? any help?

A magnaflow sounds pretty good, glasspacks do not. I got a magnaflow on mine right now and am pretty happy. You may also want to get a high flow cat to match with the new muffller.

Man I wanted to hear that thing under full throttle! It sounds good though. I'm still using previous owners exhaust setup which I think is high flow cat and 80 series flowmaster, and am working on getting a set of headers now. It's got a nice rumble now, but I'm hoping that the headers will give me a little more free flowing sound like you got.

I got some chrome muffler tips from a camaro z28 at the junk yard the other day and they look clean i haven't welded them on yet but i want some flowmasters too for the sound, i want it to be loud, to bark, any ideas what kind i should get or do?

Re: 89 camaro 2.8 v6 exhaust options

well i just put a flowmaster 80 series on my stock 86 fbird it sounds deeper but not loud. It sounds no different in thecar but out side of the car its alittle different. I suggest getting the dynomax catback and headers and after that you still dont like the sound get a cutout

so just flowmasters by themselves on a stock car wont make much of a difference right? that was my plan just to put them on with everything else stock

Re: 89 camaro 2.8 v6 exhaust options

ya all stock. Ide suggest putting on a flowmaster 40 series for some loudness but if you do that you loose the duel outlet but if you want it to be super loud then its worth it i guess.

If you are going to put just a new muffler on the old stock I-pipe you will need the muffler inlet to be 2 1/4". Most people overlook that and buy a muffler with a 2 1/2" inlet. My ...go with the dynomax catback. I havent heard a v6 with flomasters that I liked.

Re: 89 camaro 2.8 v6 exhaust options

anyone got one of these? I found it "you know where" under Cat Back System Camaro. Looks tempting but not sure how loud it would be. I'm more afraid of it being too loud and gettin pulled over every couple of blocks.

Looks like airflow could get impeded a little at the T, but then again thos are 3" pipes comin' out the back!

haha, I drove around for about a month with the stock manifolds, y-pipe, and cat...with nothing else. It was pretty loud, very fun, and no I did not get pulled over.

That setup would be really loud, not to mention that it would sound like crap.

I don't think it would sound any different than a cutout. or straightpipes for that matter. I must admit I haven't heard a 2.8 w/ straightpipes though. Anyway thought I'd throw it out there.

I've got glasspacks on my 'maro and I've never been pulled over. Probably goanna ditch them though cause they're so damn loud. And they exit under the seats.

Side pipes?

I don't think I've ever seen that if that's what they are. Just out of curiosity where you lacated at? I know I could get away with them in KS, but my next duty station is Ft Campbell and I don't know about out there.

Re: 89 camaro 2.8 v6 exhaust options

Nope, not side pipes. Well, sorta... hacked up the stock exhaust and stuck 'em next to the rocker panels right below where you sit. I'm in Denver and cops never bat an eye. Kinda annoying when I'm trying to listen to the radio. I mostly did it so I could make all the rice boys listen to my exhaust for a change. It gets the job done.

Re: 89 camaro 2.8 v6 exhaust options

Anyone know what a GMMG Chambered exhaust would sound like on a v6? Also, wouldn't you have to do something about where the I-Pipe meets the cat cause the I-Pipe (if I remember correctly) is 3 inches. looking to get pacesetter headers and a high flow cat for my 2.8. Wanted to know if anyone's ever heard the GMMG system on one. If so, please post a clip. Thanks.

Don't know about the GMMG exhaust but the stock exhaust is 2 1/4" I beleive. The biggest you would want to go on these motors is 2 1/2", 3" is a tad too big.

If you did go to 3" would it hurt anything too serverly in the performance area? I'm not lookin' to go super fast or anything. I'm just lookin' for a loud exhaust n I like the way GMMG and TSP Rumbler sound. also, with the pacesetters, they would be small than 3" so I would still have backpressure before the cat. lots of people on fullthrottlev6.com have the rumbler and love it. course, they all have 4th gens so I dont know if the rumbler would fit on a 3rd gen.

Re: 89 camaro 2.8 v6 exhaust options

Most of those guys have 3.8s which is a completely different motor. I would stay 2.5" throughout the exhaust but you can just get the muffler adapted on which any shop will be able to do. A whole 3" system would hurt you. Also remember that your motor will not sound like a V8 with that exhaust, I'm not sure how it would sound exactly but it will be loud.

I know it's not gunna sound like a v8. If I wanted that, I'd sell my 6er. So what you're sayin is, after my cat, I should get the exhaust shop to make 2.5" pipe all the way back and have them bend it to look like the rumbler since that's what I want? Or did I miss understand that? Sorry, if I'm asking too many questions. Just want to get this right the first time and not have to do it again. Also, the end of the y-pipe for pacesetter is 2.25". Should I get a 2.5 in/out cat and just have the shop adapt the y-pipe to the rest which would be 2.5? Thanks so much for your input already. Hope to hear back from ya soon.

Re: 89 camaro 2.8 v6 exhaust options

The y-pipe is 2 1/4 I believe. The y-pipe will bolt up to the stock cat (I would get a high flow or gut the stocker). Then get the exhaust shop to make a 2.5" pipe all the way to the muffler where they should be able to flare it to meet with the muffler. Get the 2.5" cat too. I think that you can just buy the Dynomax pipe that goes from the cat to the muffler, it will bolt to the stock cat and it may save you a little at the shop so they don't have to make a pipe, also they could finish up faster.

I know this thread is from a while ago, but I just wanted to throw out there that I have 97 firebird formula exaust from the catback along with pacesetter headers and it sounds pretty good. Not REALLY loud but has a nice deep rumble to it and it doesnt whine out when i get up to higher rpms
