Engine Mounts...

When i get on my car from a stop there is a loud banging noise coming from the front end. Its very quick and only happens once. Seems to me that i could be my engine moving and slamming against my car. This happened to my friends 92 5.0, but i dont recall how much it cost him to fix...it did turn out to be his engine mounts. My question to you guys is, do you think that this is what the problem could be, could it be something else, how much do you think it would cost to fix, and what would fixing it entail?

I paid $10 for my TRANNY MOUNT!
Got tons of oil & grease for the effort.
Noise is from the passenger side, floor boards.
It's the tranny mount.
FIX IT QUICK or you MAY break an exhaust manifold!
Check the CC for the "hit" marks.

Car: 1986 Firebird
Engine: 2.8 V6
Transmission: 700R4
Fixing it's easy... do it yourself!! Three bolts take the old trans mount out. I've been through 2 stock rubber trans mounts in 3 years- I'm now on a Energy Suspension polyurethane trans mount... $20 from http://www.summitracing.com . This trans mount has lasted me since 1997!

Did I miss something, or is he talking about engine mounts, not tranny mounts (no flames intended )? Engine mounts are easy to change, just look at them and they are pretty much self explanitory. I wouldn't know where to get them; look them up in Summit or Jegs. I would go into more detail, but I am a little pressed for time.
I GRADUATE TOMORROW!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry, had to tell someone!

Vortex, ya know what, when I saw "get on my car from a stop" and "banging noise", I assumed (and I think Ked did too!) that he heard the noise under the floor.

You're right, he did say "from the front end"... oops!

No, I read the thread correctly.
I'll bet it is his tranny mount, tho.
Kinda hard for a motor mount on these little engines to go.
The tranny mount is the weakest link.
That's why I gave that response. Many complaints about mounts I've noticed, tended to eventually come down to worn out tranny mounts.

Maybe it has something to do with suspension, also, since it is the front of the car. Have a friend listen to each side of the car when you take off, and try to narrow it down by sound. Then just start inspecting everything until you find the problem. Good luck!
Tranny mount would be good to replace just as Ked85 and TomP suggested. Preventative maintenance - it IS a good thing if you have the time and money! I am in Lee's Summit, MO if you ever need help working on your car.

ok...a few questions...
Does the noise happen only during moderate-hard acceleration? That could be the engine shifting and hense be an engine mount.
However if you hear a thudding from beside you during the same acceration perameters it could be your tranny mount being shredded even farther (the thudding is the tranny lifting and hitting the trans/driveshaft tunnel). You will also feel a jerk and another resunding thud/grind sound when the trany comes back down (it would be the rear driveshaft pinion forcing its way into the rear center section of the axle.)

You can check the engine mounts by starting the car and having it running then pop the hood and rev the engine from the throttle body. If the engine moves side to side alot then you found your problem. The engine mounts require a lift to replace them(or they make it a hell of a lot easier). Engine mounts typically go for 30-60 bucks each for good quality ones. GET THE QUALITY ONES!!!!.

Now if it's your tranny mount then it is cheap and easy to replace yourself. To check your tranny mount lift the car on ramps and put blocks under the rear tires to keep the car stable and try to lift the rear of the tranny. If it goes up you have found the problem. A tranny mount is a 10-20 buck fix and requires the car off the ground and a floor jack to raise the rear of it(the tranny) to take the weight off the cross member. Take out the crossmember bolts(leave 1 in to hold it up) take out the bolts/studs holding the tranny mount. Then reinstall...

hey thanks a lot guys, it turned out to be the tranny mount. i had a friend powerbrake it and the tranny literally lifted off of the frame and smacked the floor boards. i guess thats what was making the noise....
anyways, i got it fixed and the pad only costed like 7 dollars...not a big deal when you think of the things that could have gone wrong had i not of noticed it (yeah right),...but thank you guys very much for the information.
