2.8 Custom Carb Swap

2.8 Custom Carb Swap
Yes I know that this probably should be in the carb area, but it is about V-6 only, so I decided to place it here. You may burn me if you wish, but please make sure that is Premium and not plain old unleaded!
Anyways decided to start a new thread about this swap instead of piggybacking the old one, so here it goes...Got tired of poor MPG, poor throttle response, lack of power, etc, and decided I would go break the law and do away with the feedback carb on my Camaro. KrisW gave me the idea to use a TBI intake off of a 2.8 S-10, and stick a much better carb on it. I had a old Rochester 2-Jet off of a Buick odd fire 231 V-6 just waiting for me to do something with it. So after cleaning up the intake, I layed the carb base gasket on the intake, marked where I needed to drill and grind, and went to work!

Re: 2.8 Custom Carb Swap
After mounting the intake on the car, it became obvious that I needed to turn the carb around to make it work. This also meant removing the factory throttle linkage bracket from the pass. side valve cover and modifying it. After drilling out the spot welds, it was cut in half and turned upside down in order to get the throttle cable to the bottom and the TV cable up top. I welded on a 90 degree bracket to the throttle part to allow me to be able to bolt on the TV bracket. This allows me to adjust it placement and get it just right. Since the carb is facing backwards, the cables needed to be switched for it to work. Here are some more photo's.

Re: 2.8 Custom Carb Swap
Since the 2.8 TBI intake is 1.25" taller than the old one the air cleaner needed to get lowered over the carb. I didn't have the one that came with the 2-Jet, so I just modified the old one that came with the Camaro. I ended up dropping it a inch overall and it fits. It's up against the hood, but it doesn't seem to rub or make noise, so I'm calling it good. It still needs the welds cleaned up and the air cleaner painted, but that's no big thing. The lid is upside down so the wingnut is down and not up. If I was really worried about it, I would cut it out, flip it over, and weld it back in, but for now it works! I can't even begin to tell you how much this swap improved the drivability of the car! It has much better throttle response, better overall power, and much better fuel economy. Next up is back-dating the distributor to a HEI. Stay tuned!

nice job, next mod should be a set of heads of a fuel injected motor and a cam upgrade

Re: 2.8 Custom Carb Swap
I would like to go turbo on it, but that will have to wait till I get a 3.4 short block. Next is swapping out the TH200C for a 700R4. Then to fix the exhaust. Yes it will get upgraded, just not to sure on the "When" part!

yeah if ur eventually going to get a 3.4 dont bother with the heads or cam, the 3.4 will have the better heads and it dont advise to reusing a hyd flattp cam cause if u mix up a pair of lifters its real easy to wipe out the cam

Re: 2.8 Custom Carb Swap
since u plan to turbo it u cant go wortng with either motor if u were oging to stay n/a the 3.4 would be the better choice
but in turbo form ive proved that the displacement difference from the 3.1 to 3.4 isnt big enough to worry about my car has run just as fast and faster then the other 3.4 powered fbodys out there

Re: 2.8 Custom Carb Swap
If you're going to go with a 3.4, get an Edelbrock 4-barrel carb intake. The engine will thank you for providing it with the air it needs, especially after you throw a spooly thing at it, if you're going to. There really isn't much upgrading to be had with a choky 2-barrel carb...
Older HEI dizzy's came on the older S10s. Look for the coil in the cap with the vacuum advance pot on the side. There's a thread floating around about this.

Re: 2.8 Custom Carb Swap
Yea I'll be getting a HEI dist. soon. When I finally start the turbo, I had planned on using that intake, but cutting it down and welding on a 4bbl top. It should flow enough air since it is a single plane. Time I have, funds are a different story. I was going to start off like a Chevy Corvair at first, with no intercooler, and if I remember, they didn't use a wastegate either. I think that they were able to get away with that because the intake runners, valves, and the system as a whole hasn't able to flow too much cfm to worry about over-boosting it! I was thinking I could re-locate the carb, and move it closer to the turbo, much like the Corvair. That way I can use a draw through as apposed to a blow through system. I want to start off small, and upgrade as I go. I love to fab stuff, so custom anything isn't a problem. My health, and lack of funds will be more of a issue, than fabricating a (or many) turbo/s set up.

Re: 2.8 Custom Carb Swap
I know they do, but I can modify mine for $20.00, where as the Edelbrock intake plus top is $$$! Like I said, time I have, money I don't. I'd rather spend the money that would have been spent on the Edelbrock intake, and buy the turbo instead! There's a method to my madness!
