Performance ideas
Performance ideas
I just bought a 1991 camaro RS. It has a 305 in it and all stock. I was looking for some performance ideas to make it fast. I was thinking a cam shaft or something, but i would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.
Welcome, I'm fairly new aswell, but I may be able to help. Here's some ideas: gears, stall, port the intake, gut the airbox, K&N's, a catback exhuast, I'm gonna put in a 350, maybe an LS1, but you can go preety fast with a 305, headers, headwork or heads. Just some ideas.

Before you spend your money come up with a plan. Are you looking to just pick up a little extra power(we all know what that leads to) or do you want to go 13's/12's/11's. You will save aLOT OF CASH IF YOU BUILD IT RIGHT THE 1ST TIME.

Yea.....you really can't gut the airbox on a TBI?? I suggest going to the TBI board and searching there, but a plan is the best way to go. You need to look at the whole picture....such as me working on the suspension and drivetrain first (trying to get rid of parasitic power loss).

Definately full exhaust, headers and a cat-back first. Do a cam swap then some gears, 3:42s. Change the heads and if an auto higher stall TC.

I bought my 1991 RS 305 TBI a year and a half ago and here are my mods that I am happy with: K&N filter, Hedman headers, gutted cat, Flowmaster Exhaust, Pacesetter Dual Bore exhaust tips, Accel 300+ Performance Ignition, 300+ race wires, Bosch platinum +4 spark plugs.....

All of the guys here have great ideas, but like TBurke said, "Get a Plan". The 305 can make some decent power if you work at it, but is it economically feasible. Not likely. I like a challenge as much as the next guy, but for the same amount of money to hot-rod the 305 you could have a screaming 350 from a later model camaro or firebird. So where do you start with your plan?
First, make sure the car is in good shape:
Make sure the car is safe to drive. Check belts, hose, tires, fluids, etc...
Change all filters and valves that quickly go bad
Tune the Car
Make sure there is no codes in the ecm
Second, do all the relatively free mods:
Removing the smog pump
Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator
Remove any unnecessary weight
Use a smaller air cleaner lid or turn yours upside down (if it fits) to open the sides of air filter up for more air
Check the Technical Articles on this site for many more free mods
Also do a search for the word free on the message boards.
Read everything. The more you know, the better you can make a good, solid decision about how you want to proceed with your build up.
Third, reinforce the bones of your car:
Suspension. No matter what engine you use, your car will benefit from handling upgrades.
Fourth, do performance mods that are not related to the internal parts of the engine
A good set of gears (3.42 or 3.73)
Headers and nice flowing exhaust system
Cold air intake or a raised hood (cowl or ram air)
New High Pressure Fuel Pump
Fifth and final step - the engine:
This were you make that final decision. Build up that 305 or a new engine. By this time you should have saved up enough money and read enough articles that you know what you want to do.
My plan
I wanted to include my opinion. Not that its worth much. I'm driving the 305 in my car as long as it will take me or until I have a surplus of cash to put in a new engine. I plan on finding a wrecked 4th Gen with an LS1. This will give me an engine, transmission, a rear end with disc brakes and posi, and a lot of parts to sell to offset my investment cost. This is one of the better ways to build up your 3rd gen. Plus everything is bolt-ons. No internal work, just swap the motors. Does this mean neglect your 305. No, keep it in good running order. It’s cheaper to maintain than fix. And, you will need your old engine and transmission as a spare, just in case.
Well there it is. I hope this helps. I would welcome any comments from anyone who has a better idea or think there needs to be a change. Above all, read everything. Listen to these guys and gals on this site before your local parts guy or dealership. Why? Experience. They've been there.

I second getting a plan. I CANNOT stress how important that is. If you don't get a plan you'll end up where I am. $10k spent and your car doesn't run or it's still slow. I made so many mistakes in building my car it's not funny. DO NOT settle for less because it's cheaper at the time. Otherwise you will do it more than once. That's more expensive and really frustrating. You could be buying new parts to help out a different aspect of your car instead of fixing the same thing you already did.
