Good distributor

Who makes a good distributor for the TPI cars? I has looking at the MSD but I would like to know if anyone has had good luck with one or if there is another one that's better? Thanks.

I bought and installed a new GM HEI distributor for my 355, and it works great. Part number is 1103952 and it costs about $160 from Dal at VanDevere Olds.

A regular GM HEI should be fine unless your planing to push your car past 5500 rpm, using NOS, or a supercharger. GM's HEI is pretty strong, and a lot cheaper than MSD. In my opinion a MSD distributor would be a hardcore racing part.

So your saying the breaking point of a GM distributor is about 5500 RPM? My car has a 6000 RPM red line so I need something that can go up that high. Thanks.

Yeah the stock hei tends to crap out at a fairly low RPM, but if you get one from one of the major suppliers (pertronix, proform...) they have better components that can spin past 7000 RPM no problem. Any of these will work fine for you. The MSD is definitely a quality piece and a good choice. Just depends on what your looking for in terms of tunability (is that a word??) and price.

Just a comment on the MSD dist. If your running an Edelbrock or TPIS manifold base with a larger runner diameter, then the MSD will hit the top of the runner area that passes on the driver side rear of the manifold. The MSD billet dual connector distributor p/n 8366 is shorter from the manifold sealing surface to the bottom of the plate that the cap screws to. The screw & threaded inserts will hit the manifold before it can be seated properly. I've seen some manifolds that could be ground, others were too thin at that runner.

Stock is fine, get a better coil and a multiple spark discharge box and the stock distributor will be good above and beyond 6k. Aftermarket distributors for a street
motor is a waste of cash. An aftermarket distributor will not increase performance, the only difference is blueprinting (bearing clearances), billet and how the gear receives oil. Insignificant and unnecessary for a street motor.

So question is what do you think I should do. I need to replace my distributor. It's totally screwed. So What to do? Buy a stock one or an MSD? It's mainly a street car but it's not stock in any way. I already have a Holly lazershot coil and a MSD 6AL ignition box. Thanks.

Go ahead and buy the stock AC Delco one unless you find a screamin' deal on the MSD.

First thing you need to do is determine why your stock one is screwed. Next, get a good stock HEI and buy a high voltage coil and 8mm wires. That alone should be good on a slightly modified engine to 6K rpms. A MSD 6a box is a good thing for nitrous, etc..

I know why it went bad. Nothing to do with the car itself. Had a roof leak onto it and it rusted solid. That is really the only thing I need to replace. I already have a good high voltage coil, 8.5mm wires, and a MSD 6AL box. It's not really a slightly modified motor. It does have a mini ram on it. So I also need to know if distributor will work with that. Thanks.
