MSD Ignition?
MSD Ignition?
i dont have any mods on my car yet. i was planning on adding the msd ignition first. would this be a smart move or not? if so then what all do i need to get with which system?(plugs, wires, distributor, etc.)

It would be about the last thing I'd do. You won't see much benefit, if any, on a stock engine.

The 6AL does have a rev limiter, which is nice, but as far as noticable performance improvements go, there are better things to spend money on (especially with a stock car).

MSD Advertises their 6A(L) boxes will improve power, quicken throttle response, smooth out idle and starting, reduce spark plug fouling, improve mileage and reduce emissions. All sparks, including each multiple spark, is 110 milliJoules of spark energy. Steps up the primary voltage to 470 volts. Spark series lasts for 20° of crankshaft rotation. Operates at full power with a supply of 10 - 18 volts and will run down to 5 volts. Cast aluminum housing and Humi-Seal coated circuits protect the electronics. Can be triggered using points, electronic ignitions or magnetic pickups.
I think the biggest argument against the MSD box is that if you throw a lit match into a puddle of gas, it'll all burn, so how would throwing hundreds of tiny matches help? You'd be suprised; I'm a believer in the box and feel it makes a fine addition to any vehicle in any stage of modification.

i picked up an msd6a for free after doing a job for a fella, and i installed it in my vacum advance carbed car... i felt a rather large gain over the previous igniton- and i had a racing module, and all the good parts in the distrrbutor. now that the msd is acting as the module (i'm using the magnetic trigger pick up) i've honestly felt a pretty good difference.
I can't necesarily speak for idle quality, but bottom end power is much stronger, and smoother. For sure my throttle responce is also better, and cold and hot starts are better...
as for mileage, i didn't notice any difference. and i havent been to emmisions yet, but i'm sure it wont help me pass

Yes, but, I would only get it once you have modded the car a little. I did mine after my intake and exhaust mods(see sig). I did notice it helped make more power at the top of the power band. Throttle responce was much nicer, and my gas mileage improved a lot. But I also have the coil, good cap and rotor,8.5 milli's, and U-groove plugs that are gapped at .55.(stock was .35). So it may not be just the box, but it definately kicks the stock ignition's ---!
