hypertech prom chip

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

would that chip make any kind of difference on a 89 firebird with a 305 TBI that has ngk plugs, 8.5 msd wires, msd blaster coil and cap and rotor and an accel ICM and a K&N air filter and other than that totaly stock?

im just trying to see before i blow 120 on something if it dont do anything

thanks

Re: hypertech prom chip

I recommend the hypertech thermomaster chip. I have one in my 85 tpi iroc. I have used it for 5 years now and havn't had a problem. I have used it with both the 305 and my 355. It lowers the temp that the fan comes on and gives it a more aggressive spark curve. You'll have to replace your thermostat to a 180 degree one to get the benefits of the new chip. I think there worth it but that's just me and mines tpi also.

I'll buy that.....about the thermostat anyway. I noticed it ran alot better with a thermostat at 180 rather then the 165 recommended by Hypertech.

The thermostat runs about 7-10 bux from your local parts store. You can put just the thermostat in but it won't turn the fans on earlier so in traffic it will still run just as hot as it does now. You can hot wire the fans to come on with the key though. I still recommend the chip though.

Re: hypertech prom chip

I never thought I would purchase one after reading the boards, but my latest car came with one and a stock chip. I tried it both ways and it has more power with the chip in, and I am checking the gas mileage. It also is the only IROC that I have owned that runs cool, and even did up in the mountains where I crept to 210 every time I drove up the driveway with the previous car. I will post what the mileage difference is. All my cars have been TPI, I don't know if it would work as well on a TBI.

Re: hypertech prom chip

A note on the t-stat: For the TPI engines, from what I've read, the best comprimise is a 170* t-stat. I know of only two places to get one. The dealerships sell AC Delco and TPIS sells one also. From what I understand the TPIS one is just a reboxed Delco. You have to have the p/n when ordering from the dealership. If you ask for a 170* t-stat they'll tell you it doesn't exist 'cause it won't pop up on the computer. The p/n is 10220957. For more info on the coolant system, read the Total Fan Control article found in the tech articles:

people just need to stop downing chips, NOT everybody has dough just to dish out for some custom chip. Hypertech and JET chips are fine for stock to midly motors, dont worry about custom chips until performance mandates it.
just my 2 cents

Re: hypertech prom chip

Stop downing chips? Burning my first chip (admittedly, a direct copy of my current chip) cost me less than $100. Last I checked those Hypertech chips clocked in at $250. Who doesn't have the dough now?

Re: hypertech prom chip

actually 149 but whos counting, and u didnt include cost for chips or equipment, sure u can make better chips yourself but at least give people the time to learn and grow. DAMN
im not shamin burn u own stuff im just sayin let people make their own decision, isnt this hobby about personalization

Re: hypertech prom chip

http://www.moates.net/

Plus the DIY prom board and tuning board here. You can pick up a Willem Eeprom programmer off of ebay. Get one that requires external power, the USB port on your compy doesn't provide as much power as is needed most of the time. The eeprom programmer can be as cheap as $20 (What I paid) or as much as $100 (Programs any chip. Ever.) the programmer also allows you to read chips. You can also buy an all-in-one kit from Moates.

A little bit of research here goes a *long* way. Have fun.
