icon pistons? good, bad?

Im kinda on a budget and really I'm just looking for the biggest bang for my buck at the correct CR. I found icon pistons at the right price and I was wondering what the people of thirdgen thought. Any advice is well appreciated because this is my first engine build

Mild drag. And I'm not using nitrous until I get the parts for a stroker. I'm also staying NA until then so I was looking for something with a little dome to get me too that 11:1

Re: icon pistons? good, bad?

Kevin what your buying is a mid quality piston that is alittle better than cast but not really forged. They have a feature built into them with off-set pins to limit cold piston slap. Standard ring sizes not metric which I like. Pin sizes that press fit pins is ok.

At 11.1 your way heavy for any pump gas use..............

Woudl 11.1 really be that much ahrder to run on pump gas than 10.5? My 10.5 runs on 89 with no pinging, I would think it could run 91 or 93 at 11.1

How can they advertise as forged if they are cast?

Re: icon pistons? good, bad?

It almost sounds inconceivable, but I-Con told us the top portion is forged only.

Re: icon pistons? good, bad?

You'll see on this chart a final bore/hone size that is very much like forged pistons:

That make sense for their "forged head relief" line of pistons. Those are their cheaper line of pistons. I'm guessing the ones they list as "forged" only are normal forged pistons. Like the IC604.

Re: icon pistons? good, bad?

Although this post is over two years old ICON would like to state that ALL ICON pistons are 100% forged, both the Premium 2618 alloy and FHR 4032 alloy. The FHR that once stood for Forged Head Relief was referring to the valve pockets as they are formed in the forging die unlike the Premium series that are machined in. We now state the FHR as Formed Head Relief as to not confuse customers that only the top is forged, which of course cannot be done. The forged FHR series is an excellent choice for street performance that can be used with mild boost (15lbs) or nitrous (250hp). For more serious applications it is recommended to use the Premium 2618 alloy series.

Good info to have. I like the ones I'm running now and will probably buy a set on my next build too.
