TES Headers

I just wanna know if the Edelbrock TES headers are worth the 300 they ask for em. also how hard are they to install on my car. im not too informed about headers for 89 IROC's so im up for any new ideas. kind of a limited budget so i can't spend a big amount, thanks for any imput.

If you get the TES you have to get them jetcoated or they will S**t out on you in a few years. Installation is a B***h but easy if you take your time and think stuff out.

what other headers would you advise, or would jet coating be the best bet.

I agree that you need to get the Edelbrocks coated if you go with them. The guy running the performance shop I hang around has put on 4 or 5 of these systems and has had to remove them after a little over a year, because they were cracking. He's had good luck with Hedman's system. Try them if you need AIR. Hooker makes a great shortie header, but the y-pipe has to be custom made. If you have the cash and staying smog legal isn't necessary, get the Hooker Super Competition coated headers. They are long tubes with 1 3/4" primaries that will last forever. Again the y-pipe needs to be made. They sound better than shorties, and when you start heavilly modding your engine or putting in a bigger one, they'll be ready to handle it.

On a 350 TPI, go with SLP's headers. Edelbrocks are too small. Check the GP forum for the deal on SLP headers right now.

I would consider the Edelbrocks as a "cheap" alternative to good headers. The primaries may be 1 5/8" advertised, but with all the welding slag and air tubes, there's no way. I just pulled mine, and after looking at them and their lousy quality, I wish I'd sucked it up and went with the SLPs.

Unless you want severely rusted headers in about one year, you MUST get them coated! BUT, the cost to coat them and the cost of the TES adds up to as much or more than a set of SLP stainless steel headers and y-pipe!

I've gone through three sets of Edelbrock TES and will never buy them again. I currently have a set of coated SLPs and I'll never go back.

Summit website shows Hooker 2055's (HOK-2055) for $350. Those should include AIR & O2 sensor fittings. In the catalog, they say add $185 for coating.

Although they are 1-5/8" primaries, I doubt they would be restrictive to most. Certainly not to the 305 guys.

Anyone have them, or considered them?

I bought my Edelbrocks 3 1/2 years ago because they were $313 vs like $450+ for SLP's. I wanted the 1.75 primaries, but the added cost wasn't worth it IMO. It is true that the intry on the TES headers is kinda messy. I grinded quite a bit of it out before installation. There is no coating on mine and I have had no problems w/ cracking etc. Only light surface rust. I don't think that they are as bad as everyone says they are. I recomend cleaning up the entry though.

IrocStan,

Have you looked at your y-pipe lately? I'll bet it's pretty nasty by now! If it's not, I'm guessing you don't drive that car in the winter! The y-pipe is going to be the first part to rust through and crack in half.

Yeah, come to think of it, the y-pipe is pretty nasty. The y-pipe sliped my mind because the rest looked so good. No hole or anything yet. Did I mention that I am still on the original gaskets? There is a slight leak that I only hear when beside some thing, like a concrete wall or passing a car etc. I am pleased with them. I reccomend them to since you are on a limited budget. But if you plan on going crazy with mods in the future, get the 1.75 SLPs or Hooker long tubes. I wish I had a bigger set now, but I don't regret buying them when I did. The price difference was insane 3.5 years ago. Now the prices are closer. It is just of those things. You say, "Oh, I'll get headers. They are only $300. But wait, for a little more I can have a better set." It never ends. Just decide what you plan on doing in the future. I know that the SLP's were on sale not too long ago. I think they were $399.

I have the Hooker 2055 headers on my '87 IROC (305TPI/A4) and love them. They don't have the restrictions inside the primary tubes like the Edelbrocks do. I did grind down the air tubes some since they were sticking about 1/8"-1/4" into the primaries, but that was it. I picked up torque and horsepower through the whole powerband of the engine (1200 to 5000 rpm). With a 2400 stall converter, the low-end at WOT doesn't matter anyhow.

I had mine Jet-Hot coated for thermal and rust protection, and the headers still look brand new. The Y=pipe isn't in nearly as good of condition due to a small long-term coolant leak and the distance from the engine (doesn't get hot enough to cook off anything that sticks to it). The headers fit very good and should support my upcoming 350 engine nicely...

All I have to say is that 1 year after installing my TES Headers I have been nothing but happy with them. My friend has had them for over 2 years now (also non-coated) and he is also very happy with them. We both haven't had any problems with them at all and the performance gains we have been more than happy with!! I give the Edelbrock TES Headers, my thumbs up!!
