Summit
Once again Summit have amazed me with their service. They shipped a crankshaft, rods, pistons and rings on Wednesday and I got the call from FedEx on Friday saying that the parcels had arrived (and I'm in Atlantic Canada). Shortly after that, Summit refunded $52 to my credit card because they said they overcharged me for shipping (although I had already agreed to and paid the original shipping quote for Truck freight to my door).
Another positive experience with Summit for me.

I go with USPS when possible but above a certain weight parcel they have to ship by courier. I had headers and cat-back shipped last year and that had to be shipped by courier also.
The entire purchase was $928 CAN, and because it had to go truck freight I had to pay an extra $262 CAN for shipping ...Summit then refuned $60 CAN of that. I had to pay $130 CAN tax to Fedex, but that's the 14% sales tax, not duty or additional fees. Car parts are supposed to be duty free by the free trade agreement, but it seems like the postal service conveniently forgets that on occasion.
I was expecting to get severely raped by Fedex because UPS have taken me big-time before with their brokerage fees (I had to pay UPS $200 "brokerage fees" one time for shipping a set of heads. I had already paid almost $200 shipping on that parcel before it was shipped ...so UPS got me for $400 on a parcel sent from Rhode Island ...and they are no faster than regular postal service).
I didn't choose FedEx Expediated, I went with Fedex Economy (which is slower), but my parcels should be here on Monday (I'm not in St. John's so it will take an extra business day for them to get it out to me). If not on Monday then they should be here by Tuesday before 6:00 PM. But I set my calendar ahead one day, so if it arrives late on Tuesday, it's not really late because it's not really Tuesay, it's Monday.

All in all, Summit's shipping to Canada is much cheaper than other companies (and God knows I've had enough parts shipped from the U.S.).

FedEx charges brokerage too, just not as exorbitantly as UPS.
Canada Post is the best deal for crossing the border. You'll only pay a $5 charge for them to collect your PST/GST/HST/whatever.

Summit and other other shippers don't charge brokerage in advance. In some of the more expensive rate classes (UPS Worldwide Express for example, not sure about FedEx, etc.), brokerage is included in the shipping charges. If not, you'll end up getting an invoice in the mail. If they've allready collected at your door though, then probably not.

As mentioned, USPS is the way to go for Canadians. Always the cheapest. Although they've been slower this year for some reason.
My experience with UPS has been dreadful. Expensive with lots of fees. And not any quicker than the rest. They nailed me good with brokerage fees on my Valentine 1 radar equipment.
Fedex does charge brokerage fees like UPS, but not as much. They sent me a bill a couple weeks after they delivered the item. I'll use them if I have to use a courier. But otherwise it's USPS. I wouldn't recommend UPS to anyone.
I've heard nothing but good stuff about Summit. Never used them myself though. Probably will soon.

hmm, yes, dreadful experiences here with UPS as well, duty fees in excess of the part fee.
Fedex is better? Good to know.
USPS from summit is only available as airmail though, you don't have the option of USPS ground (it'd probably take 2 months anyway
). So USPS (airmail) is kinda pricey... Maybe i'll try doing a fedex truck shipment next time...
I really like mcmaster carr that way, "overnight" is literal, from Ohio as well, purolator comes next day at 11am.

really? how long do you wait for summit USPS parts? (if you do that?) I'm wondering if my 2 cases were freak cases, ie, first time was christmas time, 2nd time perhaps there was a back ordered part or something...

Usually about 7 working days for USPS. UPS is at least 10 working days.
I don't order parts from Summit that often though, unless I'm making a large order. Everything else I usually get locally.
