First and possibly last Hawks purchase
My first purchase from hawks third gen was a simple drivers door lock switch plate. the screw holes broke out of mine. I figured why not used, the one in the pictures looks good, there isn't any fine print about used being lower quality, they wouldn't send me a piece of junk. WRONG!!! The piece they sent me is all scratched up and has some deep scratches. they couldn't pay me $10 to put this thing in my car. I understand used but there is a difference between junk/trash and used. this is the worst experience i've had buying parts in the 14 years i've owned this car.
this may be a $10 part/small purchase but it's a first impression. With an LS/6speed swap in the works, it could be a bigger, more costly mistake than they realize. they were closed when i got home and opened the part, so we'll see how they choose to respond when i call in the morning. I will follow up on this post tomorrow about how they chose to handle this.

Re: First and possibly last Hawks purchase
Yesterday they had me e-mail a pic of the part. Due to schedule conflicts we didn't get to speak until today. I don't recall an apology but they are sending me another one. Hopefully this one is in better shape. I'm still upset about the poor quality of the first part but am happy they are sending a replacement.

I think a lot of companies do this thinking they will get the person that's like, "Oh well, it was only 10 bucks... what can you expect."
I agree that it is wrong, especially if the item pictured isn't in as good or better condition.

Note for the OP:
I sympathize with the inconvenience you experienced.
However, it is customary to try to clear-up things like this with the vendor offline before flaming the vendor on the internet.
Its your life, your rules, and your conscience of course.
Just my experience, and my two cents.

I dealt with Hawks previously, and when I had an issue, they made it right quickly. I bought their repro door trim plates and found them to be of very high quality. I am picky and I think their repro parts look good. You could have just gotten a bad set.

It's too bad the used piece the OP bought was too......used.

At least give the vendor a chance to respond before taking to the internet.

I see your point, but i ask you too see mine. There never should have been a situation for them to respond to. Any amount of quality control would have avoided this situation. If they are going to sell used parts of this quality level they should at least make some kind of indication. Here is a link, all info suggests a quality used piece, not what i received.

I understand "buyer beware", I wouldn't and didn't expect it from Hawks. Should I have?
This is not the first time I've gotten a bad part, it is however the first time I can't see a legit or reasonable excuse. That's why I'm so upset. The person that salvaged it didn't care, the person that inventoried it didn't care, the person who packaged it didn't care. How many people saw this part and didn't stop and say "wow that thing is really scratched up. Maybe we shouldn't sell this one"?

Out of all the parts a vendor sells, there are going to be some issues. It is when the vendor doesn't correct the problem that causes concern. When I had the issue with Hawks, he sent me the correct part right away with a return label to ship the other part back. I was inconvenienced a bit, but I couldn't ask for more then what they did.

Re: First and possibly last Hawks purchase
To close this story, hawks sent me a second one but it didn't survive shipping. Not a big deal, understandable situation. So they sent me a third one (btw second and third looked brand new). It arrived in great shape and is currently installed. I had to call about return shipping on the first two and politely said I was pleased with how they took care of the situation but was still upset about the first piece and why. I was surprised that the guy responded by agreeing the first piece was realy bad then denied that they sent it out like that or would sell a part like that.. He said they are claiming the first two pieces to the parcel company. To clear things up, the damage on the first piece that started this thread was not shipping related, it appeared to be from a ring/wedding band when the person reached for the inner door handle. Oh well, just glad I got what I needed.

Good to know they fixed this for you.. I have had an experience in the past where they sent me a window switch a 2nd time that I did not get the first time. No questions asked. To me, they aren't "shady", but just a longtime thirdgen business trying to make it.
