SuperRam install help

Ok i ran into a problem installin my superram. Here goes. I took off the valve covers so i can get the bottom bolt on the runners put in and now the runners are in the way of puttin the valve covers back on. So i cant put my valve covers on with the runners installed but if i dont install the runners first i cant get to that bottom bolt. the valve covers barely dont fit so i was thinkin about grinding some material off the runners but i really dont want to ............... any ideas or advice? Thanks!

What are they hitting on the other side, the AIR tubes? Are you using SLP headers? I had that problem, and just slightly bent the AIR crap outwards a hair to get the clearance. If it's the check valves, thread them off.....

What Vern said.

And, try a search. Problems with the Super Ram are legendary (which means a lot of other people have had problems). There is a lot of information available on the various problems with the Super Ram.

Good luck.

Hit them with a rubber mallet, they will go on.

I regret ever buying my superram, let alone installing it. But then i just hit the throttle and forget all about how much of a pain it is to install and work around.
My stock valve covers had to be persuaded into place with a rubber malet while my buddy held the wiring harness up.

Sorry, but I still don't understand why the valve covers are hitting the runners if it's on an engine stand and the exhaust manifold/headers are not on it. I'm using tall covers and have no problem once I "persuaded" the AIR tubes on the exhaust outwards a little bit. I also ran the injector wiring harnes INSIDE of the ruuners instead on the valve cover side.

I have the same problem when installing my vavle covers. Just line up the covers and give them a whack with a rubber mallet. The covers might leave a scratch on the runners but they will fit. Accel just didn't leave the proper clearance with the design. I'm sure the mounting angle on certain heads makes them fit fine but I know on my aluminum zz4 heads I always have to get the mallet.

As far as the wiring harness being in the way, just take off the convoluted tubing and run them INSIDE the runners instead of outside them. Makes installing the valve covers a lot easier, plus cleans up the overall appearance tremendously.

This is really weird. I have tall valve covers, that are on, and off, to set lash. I also have a stud girdle, and I never had a problem installing them. My wire harness runs along the inside, just as Vern had mentioned. BTW, my A/C is on the car too, and it causes no problems either.

I will admit, that the drivers side is a walk in the park. As for the passenger side, there is a slight clearance problem with the plastic A/C cover, thats mounted to the firewall, but still, its no big deal. Can install the cover (tall Brodix) in a snap.

Tom is right. I've still got the AIR tubes on my headers, so I have to flex them just a smidge, but that's all. If they weren't there. it would be a total cake walk. I suspect the key is running the wiring on the other side of the runners.....

Yea, Vern, I know that if I did not have the harness on the inside of the runners, the cover would be very difficult to install. Not only would space be tight, but the harness would keep going between the cover and the head.

You will most likely have problems getting the valve cover on if they are cast aluminum and centerbolt design. I just went through this...I had to clearance the lip on the valve cover where the runners are. This will allow it to slip by the radius of the runner and fall into place. If your covers are cast aluminum....don't go whacking it with a mallet....that's just stupid.

NEVER NEVER hit the valve covers with a hammer. If you bend them the slightest, they will not seal,,, drip, drip, drip.

I have been running the SR since about 1998, and I still use the stock factory valve covers. The only issue that I have had with the covers is that I had to trim out a few ribs inside to get them to fit over new roller rockers. But, the valve covers have always fit on with the SR runners bolted on. You just need to fuss with it a bit. IMO.
