Won't hurt performance as such but HSR would benefit from a different cam from stock L31 one which would require the head mods needed to run different 9 higher lift ) valve springs

Re: L31 long block with vortec hsr setup

hmm well i have 2 options here..I am looking to go long block here so i dont void a warranty just in case..I can order a tpi long block with an upgraded cam, or i can order the l31 long block straight from gm..If i swap cams or springs on that one it violates any warranty claims i believe ..Any advice on this one would be greatly appreciated..Both setups will get an HSR..

Re: L31 long block with vortec hsr setup

Whats in the TPI longblock? What intake do you wish to use? HSR will make a faster car than TPI no matter what longblock its put on. Even on stock L98's, an HSR swap is a proven power adder and will drop ET by alot at the 1/4 mile over stock TPI. Now a mild motor with HSR vs aftermarket TPI with big tube runners and big base, they are really close to same power output. As you cam it up however, the HSR takes over as it makes more power above 4500-5000 rpm.

Ok Tpi long block was odered..Not exactly sure of cam specs, guy is putting in one from the lt1 police package other than that its a stock rebuilt block .However its getting vortec heads on it .He is changing the springs on the heads for the lift....I am planning the hsr simply so i dont have to port an aftermarket base or play around buying runners and such..Hsr is actually cheaper here ..Im wondering what the combo will produce HP wise..I am putting in 24# injectors ..I already have them so i may as well use em..Once i have the exact specs im going to have a custom chip burned to get me going..

Re: L31 long block with vortec hsr setup

vortec heads, LT1 cam, and HSR should be around 260-270whp, maybe close to 280.

L98 with 1.6 rocker arms making cam lift almost same as LT1 cam, and HSR with lean tune made 254whp on my car. Vortec heads flow alot more so probably 10-15hp right there with same cam.

When you look at bolt on LT1's which are similar to HSR intakes, they make almost 300whp through a 6 spd with all the bolt ons/exhaust/tune, stock heads/cam. Thats the most i've seen, some abit over 300. 280 through an auto could be possible.

Cool. I looked at some of their engine combos. If you don"t mind my asking what did you pay for the L31 long block?

Re: L31 long block with vortec hsr setup

i bought a l98 long block from them with vortech heads on it..I had to eat the core charge on the damn thing..I believe with me not getting core credit i came in at like 2150..Thats the high torque version they offer with vortech head upgrade..Engine price alone i think came out to 1700 .. They have a website prices are on it as well ..i think the vortech heads bumped it by like 100 bucks..Overall im happy with the motor..I knew i was eating the core seeing as how my last motor threw a rod..
Hope this helps

Re: L31 long block with vortec hsr setup

Thats not to bad. How is the power? Is it a noticable gain? I'm trying to decide on either more or less the engine you bought, or buying the L98 short block and getting a lt4 hotcam and patriot performance heads with a hsr and putting it togeather myself .From my math I think it would be around the same price for either choice.

Re: L31 long block with vortec hsr setup

Power is not too bad i really dont have it dialed in yet so. Im not sure gain wise.. I will tell you this though..Carolina wont put a big cam in the l98 it voids there warranty..They are concerned with the tuning portion so they wont put a big cam in it for you..Thats why i went with the combo i did..My total engine cost came to 3 grand.. Thats the engine ,shipping, Hsr, and a new throttle body as well.It looks cool but,I think now looking back i would have bought a bigger engine and just swapped to a carb..However i may be a bit biased as i just got home from putting my car out lol..No biggy didnt do much damage but a faulty schrader valve on the fuel side caused a fire lol..
