HSR Noob Install Question

Hi Guys,

Last time I installed my HSR and heads after I put the shortblock back in the car. Is there any issue with me assembling the motor on the stand with aluminum heads and the HSR on it THEN putting it in the car? Or is it better to just install without the HSR?

I'm also wondering where you would bolt the chain too?

Sorry for the noob question but this is only the 2nd time I pulled my engine. I did a search but couldn't find anything regarding this.

Thanks!

Just use the exh manifold bolt holes (example #1 and # 8),
a piece of 2 x4 with notches in each end long enough so chain pulls up vertical from heads to timber laid on top of HSR so intake and rocker covers not damaged by chain

Re: HSR Noob Install Question

But is it safe to hoist an engine by the bolt holes in aluminum heads?

Go to a shop or wrecking yard and get the two factory brackets with the holes in them that you hook your chain to. They are located at each end of the intake caddy corner just like we have all seen for years. GM used this method and you should as well. Keep the brackets stashed on a nail above a doorway (like I do) so you can find them.

Re: HSR Noob Install Question

Lengthen the chains to clear the intake and bolt them to the accessory bracket holes on the front of the head and the same hole on the back of the head. I've done it this way a couple of times with no issues using aluminum heads.

It's also easier (in my opinion) to take the hood off and set the engine in from the side of the car instead of from the front. And then bolt the transmission on after the motor is in the car. I've found this to be especially true on the GTA where the bumper prevented the hoist from getting close enough to lift the engine out.

Re: HSR Noob Install Question

Ok. On my formula, I did take the hood off but took the engine out from the front. It was a tight fit but it worked.

My main concern building the motor on the stand was either the HSR would be in the way (and get scratched/damaged) or the aluminum heads would get stripped hoisting the engine by them. But it sounds like I will be ok hoisting in the head bolt holes or using the brackets as Abray mentioned.

Thanks a lot guys! Much appreciated.

Re: HSR Noob Install Question

Also, leave the top off the HSR when you put it in the car. That piece along with the fuel rails and throttlebody can be easily put on after the motor is in the car.
