383 SBC with HSR - is this normal?

I haven't driven my car a ton since I finished the install, but I noticed that anytime I go to get gas, it's really hard to get the cap off and once I do, you can hear a ton of air moving (not sure if in or out). Is this normal for a fuel injected 3rd gen? If not, will this cause problems?

Check your tank vent. Do you have the evap charcoal canister still operating?

You will get some pressure in tank but i dont think it should be excessive

Re: 383 SBC with HSR - is this normal?

How do I know if it's operating? It's still there and hooked up (as far as I know), is there a way to tell if it's working correctly?

Maybe I'm mistaken but I thought the tanks in these cars weren't vented? I know mine will build some pressure and give me a little purge sound when I unscrew the cap, but nothing major.

The tank is vented through the ccp to ported engine vacuum.

Sorry for the false information

You lost me in the technical jargon though, what do you mean by ccp?

On my 89 there is also a line leading into a ball valve looking thing that functions as a tank vent.

That is a vent valve , I'm not sure why they didnt use a vented gas cap but its a one one check valve to allow air into the gas tank.

Re: 383 SBC with HSR - is this normal?

Its a one way valve into? Mine always made a leaking out sound after parking it after a long hot drive. I thought it was a pressure regulated vent valve for letting air out the tank, but then fumes would be an issue and i never did smell anything.

Then again i dont run any charcoal canister purge system and have my tank open to atmosphere and dont have any issues either

Re: 383 SBC with HSR - is this normal?

Well...my canister is still there but I have no vacuum line going to it, or to anywhere in that area. Like Orr89RocZ, I have that little vent that is hooked to a line near the tank, but again nothing up front is hooked to vacuum. I overlooked this as I had a lot of problems with the engine at first, I disconnected everything including the cruise control and just never ran a vacuum line back.

So, my question now is (1) where can I get a vacuum diagram to know where vacuum should go (I think there is a port in the top of the canister, then also a port coming off of a check valve that is on top of the canister and (2) other than the tank not venting, could this cause other issues for me in terms of running or driveability?

Re: 383 SBC with HSR - is this normal?

I was just looking at this, what is the "CCV Air in"? I have a vented cap in that valve cover, is that sufficient or should it be something else? It is not hooked up to a vacuum line.

Also, I don't have an EGR so I can I just cap that vacuum line at the tee?

You can use a vented breather for air in i beleive. I did that in my hsr 383 with no issues

Re: 383 SBC with HSR - is this normal?

I hooked up my vacuum lines per the diagram (except for the EGR, which I don't have). I just stopped for gas, when I turned the cap, so much air game gushing out that it literally blew the cap out of my hand. Not sure what to try next, or just leave it?
