i just got my car painted (as most of you might know), put it away for the winter, took it out and within 3 weeks of driving it all the rust that used to be there before i got it painted is all bubbling through. now when i took it to the guy to get it painted i told him that was the only reason i was getting the car painted... to get the rust off. he told me no problem i can take care of the rust. then i asked him how long will it last before it comes through again. he told me "forever".

when i took it back to him and showed him all the rust that came back through he told me "gee thats why we dont garentee rust work"and that he could fix it for "a smokin deal of $500". i was like what the hell you told me it would last forever. and obviously he denies that. so what do you think i should do... i was thinking of taking him to small claimes court... would i have a case.. cause i took it to another painter and he told me that the guy prepped it wrong and i shouldnt have to pay for his mistake

 

take his *** to court..all you have to do to get rust off is sand it off with some sandpaper and prime it.....it doesn't take a genious to know that...srry man u got ripped off..........

Yeah man, you cant paint on top of rust! What the hell. You know some of those painters preps dont have a damn clue of what they are doing. You can start a job like that with no experience. Its not thire fault though. The painter should of known that and should of checked the work before painting it. Tell you what My Dad has been in the business for 30 years and it look there are alot of screw up shops out there. He has seen a painter paint over a piece of masking tape. No alot of the body men and helpers dont even speak english. Try and tell them how to sand off rust. Tell that dude he is going to court and see if he would like to change his mind. The owner won't smile upon a mananger that is going to court for painting on rust. Bet he will change his mind. Better yet ask to talk to the owner and tell him this shop painted over rust and said it would be fine. He is probably trying to get that 500 dollars to pay for cheap supplies just to make it look right on only the rusted spots.

 

Painting or sanding won't stop rust and it's bubbling? Either that section is going to have to be cut out or POR15(or some kind of rust inhibitor) applied to it depending how bad it is.

 

actually the guy that painted my car is the guy that owns the business. and he did tell me he used a rust inhibitor after he sanded it (i dont know for sure if he really did or not).... he said that moisture might have gotten in there between the time he used the inhibitor and painted it or something like that.

the rust is not bad at all, no holes or anything like that just i dont want it to eventually become a hole. the rust is around the top of my front windshield,around all the wheels, under my spoiler just above the lights, under the gas tank, and behind the driver side window where the firebird symbol would normally go. there is a lot of rust in small portions on my car

 

BS,rust inhibitor dries fast.Where is the rust at? If the underside where the rust is at isn't taking care of,painting or applying rust inhibitor on the topside isn't going to do any good.

You car is the same year as mine. And it was painted because of rust. It bubble back through 2 months later the guy took off 2 days before he was to repaint it. Sucky huh. OH well he had bigger problems divorce and all that.

Call better business bureau. Court will throw you out if you have nothing on paper. Where the Bureau may get under his skin better.

 

the guy should have cut the rust out. then he should have patched it, smoothed it out and painted it. that is the only way to make it last a very long time. it sounds like he just painted right over the rust. if he didn't garrunty the job, it probably will not do anything in court.

Seriously, any REAL body guy, or even a painter for that matter, knows that even a 'little' rust turns into a lot if it's not ALL taken care of. If it came back within 2 months he skipped something along the process...... One thing I've learned, body shops don't use 'rust inhibitors', they either cut it out and repanel it, or sand/bead blast it out and seal it with petrolium jelly. Punch him in the eye, he needs it......

I paint and do bodywork for a living you can get rid of rust but it will come back. Rust work isnt guaranteed but paint work is...You wont have a case in court...

You got a lot of that bacwards, we do use rust inhibitors, and we dont bead blast stuff. I work for Sonic automotive, they own plenty of dealerships so we are not some backdoor bodyshop...

I'm not trying to get in a pissing contest with anyone.....
I'm a private painter, and am hired by many local shops when a custom job is requested, so when I speak it's not from one companies methods, but the most used I've seen. Regardless, the job wasn't done right; true, the case wouldn't hold up in court, but it still makes many people skeptical about how good of a job any shop does, especially after hearing praise about the one that just bent them over.....

If the Rust came back it was never removed properly. I Spot sandblast the entire area thoroughly then use a "Metal Etch" process that coats the bare metal with a Galvanized type finish before priming. This is only if it is surface rust only. Rust holes have to be repaired by welding in a new panel. Here's the two chemicals I use for the Metal Etch process.

 

I have painted my share of cars also as a hobby. Maybe 25 over the past 20 years for friends and family. If you want to get rid of rust change the fender or panel. No bodyshop I ever found stands behind rust or rerusting. I am afraid you got mislead being told it will last forever. That's a long time!
