discover what year

i was out looking at a car for sale today. No one was home but i was still just looking at it.(may buy it when i call him and get specs if they are good). Okay, heres what i got

- the car is black with new looking paint job, and has pinstriping on top of the g/fx.(dark grey on bottom, light grey on top)

- Says'Z28' behind the front wheel

- has IROC-Z Alloy wheels.

- auto.. twin exhaust

- tail lights only had 2 horizontal slots, not like my 91 with three.

- Has louvers, not blisters

- t-tops

- small spoiler

- rear disc's

I think that the car is around an 87-88 IROC Z28 350TPI. How do i tell if it is a 350? a IROC?

Well, starting in '88 I believe the emblem will say IROC, not Z28. The 8th # of the VIN should be 8 for a 350.

Car: 3 3rd Gen F-bodies and 7 others
Engine: 305 CFI, 350 TPI & 3.8 Turbo V-6
Transmission: all automatics (stock)
1985= No 3rd brake light
1986= Upper hatch 3rd brake light
1987= 3rd brake light in spoiler
Sounds like tail lights might have been changed.

I thought they all had that emblem on the nose... Yeah forgot, about the Top Hatch Brake Light, but forget it, if it's an '86 it's not a stock 350.

Re: discover what year

- the car is black with new looking paint job, and has pinstriping on top of the g/fx.(dark grey on bottom, light grey on top)

That would be 88-90 striping

- Says'Z28' behind the front wheel

That would be on 85-87 IROC-Z's and Z28's.

- has IROC-Z Alloy wheels.

85-87 style or 88-90 style??

- auto.. twin exhaust

Doesn't say much since all IROC-Z's and Z28's were available with Auto and all had dual oulets.

- tail lights only had 2 horizontal slots, not like my 91 with three.

All IROC-Z's had the grid style tallights only, as did 85-87 Z28's.

- Has louvers, not blisters

85-87 Z28's and all IROC-Z's had this also.

- t-tops

Available on 85-89 IROC-Z's and 85-87 Z28's.

- small spoiler

Came on all 85-89 IROC-Z's and 85-87 Z28's.

- rear disc's

Could be ordered on either also, but standard on 350 IROC-Z's and I think any car with G92.

I think that the car is around an 87-88 IROC Z28 350TPI. How do i tell if it is a 350? a IROC?

My guess is this car is either an 85-87 Z28 made to look like an IROC-Z or it is an IROC-Z with some things switched around. If the VIN is 8, it is a 350 TPI. Did the car have any callouts on it like IROC-Z stickers, Tuned Port Injection and stuff?? Need more information.

Still learning my Camaro history, but couldn't he check the speedo to see if its a 350? If its an automatic and has the 145 MPH speedo, wouldn't that be a 350?

Yes all 350's had them, but so did some 305's. So, thats not something to make a decision on either.

Well it got a brand new paint job and my guess is he never got back the door decals(IROC-Z) and got the pinstriping off a newer car

That doesn't explain the rear taillights being the 82-84 Z28 or 88-90 SC/RS style. Was the car rear-ended? Is that why it was painted?

IROCZTWENTYGR8, in you post you state, "- t-tops

Available on 85-89 IROC-Z's and 85-87 Z28's. "

TTops were available on all Z28's and IROCs(85-90) from 82-92. They just weren't available (from the factory) on the 350 cars in 90-92.

I know, I was being IROC-Z and Z28 specific for years 85-89 to try and figure this car out.

If u want to know if its a 350 u might be able to check the tach. The 305 TPI has a yellow line at 5500RPM when the 350 has a yellow line at 5000RPM. If the car is a 305 TPI auto in the 1987-1989 range its not going to have a bunch of power the like 1985 auto or the 1987-1990 sticks.

I think you mean the 305 TPI has a yellow starting at 4500, not 5500. The 350's do start the yellow at 5000.

Oh yeah. I didn't think it was a 90 anyway because he would've been able to tell by the different int.
