At the detail shop I work at if the engine is filty we use a version of "GUNK' then we pressure wash, air dry and spray everything with Armour All or any tire dressing. Of course power thechrome and you are ready.

Try oven cleaner but keep it off the rubber stuff, it'll turn white.
Be sure to rinse VERY good and maybe even use an engine degreaser to get the little bit of oven cleaner off. Rinse good again.
Don't let it sit for more then 15-30 minuntes.

Also, it's not a stripper. It doen't remove paint, just grease. Inside ovens is a painted metal surface, the oven cleaner just desolves the baked on grease.

$35.00 is a cheap price. We get $75.00 for doing exactly what I posted above. You can keep that same $35.00 in your pocket and do it your self. We advertise steam cleaning but no steam is ever used. Just the pressure washer. And "deadbird", the Armour All will not harm your engine so you can di it anytime not just when you are selling.

Why not just use cellulose thinners(the same stuff used to clean spray guns with).Usually only available from a pro type paint/body shop.Cheap as hell (25 litres!! costs me £18 about $26).Very,Very effective degreaser you can use for any cleaning job on the car.As it's more of a professional use type product, use in a well ventilated area and try to use gloves.Avoid using it on cellulose paint as it may rub off.
Kerosene in a windex bottle!!! Works great. the stuff comes off as the kerosene hits it. The pressure from the spray bottle just blows the junk right off. And wash afterwords with water.
John,
Oven cleaner will absolutly take paint off. The inside of ovens have a ceramic type baked powder coat on it with a special primer used to resist chemicals. Oven cleaner is a big no no especially with quality paint jobs. I have used it to strip paint on cars that have thick coats on them before painting them. They will also leave a film if not cleaned properly will not allow paint to stick properly, act like silicon. Just thought I would save somebdy some grief especially with a quality paint job.

Shouldn't you cover your distributor and your alternator and stuff when you clean your engine? I thought about cleaning mine and I was thinking I could put some plastic bags or something over those parts.

I use Castrol super clean. This is some powerful shiznit. It takes paint off boys and girls, so mind your overspray. Other than that little problem it (plus a few rolls of paper towels) will clean your engine like nobody's business.
