Show camaro engine bay! What do you guys think?

Hi all.
What do you all think of my engine bay so far?

It is a 1986 Camaro Sport Coupe with the lowly 305 LG4 motor. Nothing spectacular, but i have built high horsepower cars before and thought this would make a change!

Luckily I have another camaro I will be using for everyday use (when it is finished).

All this is not too easy in the UK! But it will be worth it in the end!

Chrome, chrome everywhere!!

What happens to all the ex-show cars? Do they revert back to rusty bits and get neglected and sold on? I have seen many a show car that look absolutely superb, then disappear out of view, never to be seen again! What happens to them? Have any of you seen your pride and joy (or someone elses) deteriorate in someone else's hands (or your own in fact)?

Andy.

Another

Here's another one.

I'll have to get it finished soon!

Has anyone else ever bit off more than they can chew? I have 2 camaros in the "building" stage and 2 other everyday cars - all that need looking after. Also a kiddie expected early November (other one 5 years old and really appreciates big, bright, big wheeled American cars!), full time job, DIY jobs all over (loft conversion at the moment) and hours spent on the internet reading from this site!

LOL!

Andy.

That would look great in a black engine bay. It looks absolutly amazing but I don't like the red on red thing... just too much red for me.

Underside photo

Thanks for all the comments so far!
Here is a photo of the floorpan looking towards the back of the 700R4. There is so much shiny stuff (red paint and chrome) that my digital camera can't quite cope and overexposes every time! (ooh er!). And i can't get far enough away from the underside without digging a hole in the garage floor!

Andy.

Holy canolies. That is so amazing!

Makes me wish I was not into sound proofing. Strip down the bottom and paint away, but them I would hear everything on the road & the people could hear my stereo vibrating the car.

Man that is one gorgeous vehicle! Are you going to drive it? I would be afraid to.

I like it alot, makes for a better lookin view than my 3.1 V6. I dunno I hear the 3.1's can run carbed 305s, but thats if they are in bad tune, which that one is definately not in! Makes me think my car is an unkept up piece of trash, and mine is very nice. But hey, what do you expect for a daily driver who has to manage school and work. Looks good, keep it outta the mud N snow!

More pictures soon!

I'll post some more pictures soon!

Thanks for everbody's comments so far! I do intend to drive this car, but not far and in good weather! It is now ready for the airsprings to be fitted ready for the shows next year.

Still haven't decided on the wheels and tyres yet. Can't really measure up until I know how low the airsprings will take it. Then all the brackets have to be chrome plated and fitted. LOL this is taking ages!

For any interested, I bought this car from a family that used to live in Sacramento in California. They moved their business to the UK and sold it on since, quote "it was too big for the roads here"! This was in 1994 and it was white with a brown interior. It has changed considerably since then! Since 1994 the car has done only 600 miles!

Andy.

As I said before, my digital camera can't cope with the brightness of it all! I'll try to get some better ones tomorrow.

more photos

I have put 3 photos on a web site to try and get them clearer! Especially the gas tank one.
http://andyfanshawe.freewebspace.com/showcamaro.htm

The cars normal site (http://ww.lowcamaro.com) has a few good photos on, before it went into the garage for it's second "phase" of it's modifications. The engine bay was nowhere near as good as it is now, and thew underside was mucky (but no rust). The site wants updating a bit, since I have been too busy doing the Camaros than wasting time updating it!!

The car has been in a UK size garage (i.e. small!) since 1999 so any outside photos may be difficult at the moment, but I have attached one I have already got.

FLYNLOW92rs, I plan on getting the airsprings during the winter. The rims? Who knows? At the moment I am just trying to finish a 1991 RS (http://andyfanshawe.freewebspace.com/RSCamaro.htm) that will be used every day, since I am really REALLY, REALLY missing driving Camaros now! So money is tight! I want this RS one cruising during the winter (on good days!), then I can get the flames painted on early spring and then finish the show one for the 2003 season! LOL have I got some work to do!

My Wife doesn't really want to drive any of the two Camaros! But I will make sure she drives one of them, since I need them both side by side at the shows, and there are only 2 people in our house who can drive! She says one is too expensive to drive (red one) and the other is too big and fast (the RS)!

Engine bits!

Thought you may ask that!

Since the garage is small, I have to put the dismantled bits somewhere! In the trunk there is, a carter carb, water pump, wheel arch liners, front brake calipers and auto trans cooling lines! Don't worry I have changed the carpet since then! All the parts are now back on the car!

One of our small bedrooms has the cars front nose cone, cooling fan and centre console! I don't want to push my luck too far with my Wife!!

I spent the last 20 minutes looking at your buildup of the Camaro RS and i must say that it looks like it's comming along VERY good...

I noticed one thing though, they allow you to take the rear end and engine out and leave it in the street? In the U.S. you would probally get arrested for something like that or get a HUGE fine....

You should have some interesting show cars once you are completly done with the build-up.......I'm sure your son gonna appreciate it when he gets to drive one (lucky kid)........

Any way keep us updated with more pics of how it's comming along looks interesting........

Got to say andy, that looks very impressive mate.I haven't seen a Camaro as good as that in the UK yet as most of them are hanging bags of ****.

PS.What type of paint did you use underneath.

Hi erictheviking.
The underside has been gritblasted by me, from front to rear (after spending months and months and months of using a heat gun to scrape off the wax coating and old paint). It was then etch primed, stonechipped and sprayed 2-pack (again, all by me). The car has not been designed to cope with harsh road conditions (especially salt and grit!). It has been built to be a completely arrogant, bright, show off, posers, show winning car, that will be used infrequently, and in good weather!!! Our other Camaro will be used frequently and shown side by side with this one. If I ever get it finished! How did you put it?
"Not finished yet"!

Thanks for your interest in the car. I hope we meet up one day. You're right about the lack of good quality 3rd gens in the UK though. UK89Camaro's is nice and clean though. Even if he insults my scissor jack!

UK89Camaro.
You asked how much I have spent on this car....... I daren't even think about that! I bought it for £2500 in 1994, and have probably spent that again, 3 times over! BUT, in the space of 8 years. Spread out like that it doesn't seem so bad!! Pity my Wife doesn't appear to think so!

Andy.

I know you know, that I'm hugely jealous of that fabulous car!!

My clean car has the headliner fabric hanging off all over the place at the moment. (Another case of "they all do that Sir!"). Have you replaced yours?

Did any of you UK guys go to the show at Cheltenham race course last week? It was the first car show I've been to and was well worth a look. There were a lot of Camaros on show. The only thing that worried me (apart from the stereotype rockabilly band) was an almost total ignorance of dragrace cars. There was a couple of nostalgia cars pushed away at the far end of the show, and I doubt many of the cars in the show have been anywhere near a racetrack! With exception to a few nice cars at the show most of the cars I see at the racetrack are far better built, looked after, and pleasing to look at.It seems to me that shows and racing are worlds apart and perhaps show organisers should introduce more racing orientated cars to the people at the show. The blokes who I bought both my cars off had loads of yanks and neither had ever been to a dragstrip!!!The other thing that puzzled me was peoples attitude towards yank cars. You'll here people say they handle badly etc etc.But the amount of cars I looked underneath (some strange looks from people) which were still using original perished crap original bushings and shocks 20-30 years on was unbelievable.I didn't see one car anywhere near as tidy as yours Andy.Anyway enough ranting, are any of you guys going to the European finals at Santa Pod this weekend(6,7,8, sept)?About the biggest drag racing event outside the USA.Any thoughts on what I said would be welcome.

"eric",
Just got from from Hols. this weekend, so was a bit miffed at having missed the show. You are right about the racing bit and the handling comments. I don't race my car (a 305 is still nice, but not enough to get me on the strip yet!), but have just ordered a set of poly bushes, a panhard and LCA's. just need to get the kangaroo out the boot of the car! Can't make the 'Pod this weekend, am away at a wedding, and it looks like the season is coming to an end in the next few weeks. What else is on in September?

Update on this looooooooong build!

Hi all.
Going to bring this back from the almost dead! After nearly 7 years on and off building this car, but full time thinking about it and designing and redesigning, it is almost there. Just missing wheels/tyres, air suspension controller and exhaust. Oh and the tinted glass! Look.............no door handles

It will be out and about in the UK next summer.

Andy.

I think that this will get the coolest Sport Coupe ever award, in my book!! Got any pics of that with its wheels on, and in the paint? What type of air ride controller are you using for you kit? I really like the flames coming out of the front vents - original. I shaved mine on my old 85 sport coupe, it was dropped pretty hard but nothing like yours.

Nice Work.
Brandon.

Would it be wrong to say I love you? Or at least your car? That's bloody beautiful. Kept black in all the right places, paint is amazingly shiny, the flames are good and detailed. Just about the only thing I could say is the front flame shoulda extended across the whole front end. Other than that.... Wow. If this was an IROC, I'd say get the Chrome stock-style wheels for that nod towards the stock styling, but it's not. Just don't get anything that's too huge, and please don't get anything that spins.
