WalMart had a buffer on sale for like $14 over the summer, so I figured it can't hurt. I used it with some Turtle Wax pads and some Carnauba Wax. I didn't notice a difference in shine, but it was a lot easier to apply and remove.

Exactly, good way to burn some calories, or if you really want a buffer, park up front take a powered scooter to the door, take the escalator upstairs to Sears and get a buffer.

There are different styles of buffer/polishers. The wallmart one is most likely a random orbital buffer/polisher. They best for applying and removing wax.
I use a straight drive Milwaukee 5460-6 7" Heavy Duty Polisher. Depending on the type of polish and the type of the pad, I can recover all but the most severe scratches and oxidiation. It is alot of elbow grease to buff the entire car two or three times, working through the different grades of polishes. You really have to know what you are doing or you will burn your paint. Straight drive buffers are necessary for rought paint.
