Cleaning up my IRON DUKE

Just thought I would show you all some progress pictures of my Iron Duke clean up.

Since I no longer drive this car on a daily basis I thought I would give it a park and start cleaning it up!

Im still in the process of deep cleaning but the before and after is still pretty impressive!

So far I've invested 4 hours in the process with many more to go. Ive been using engine degreaser, simple green, nylon brush, brass brush and a steel brush.

So without further ado...enjoy the pictures Ive got so far.

It's bizzarre seeing a 4 cylinder in an F-body because your car is the only one I have seen with one it and still driving. Looks better after the clean up.

I don't know. It has never worked since Ive owned the car. Im probably going to be yanking it off since I will no longer be daily driving this car.

I can't image the power loss though. Geeze this puppy was slow enough off the line as it is. It has no power to go through real hilly terrain either. It cruises really awsome though on the interstate. Gotta love hittin 85 miles an hour with this car.

It's not a daily anymore? Are you keeping the Iron Duke forever (or until it croaks) or are you gonna swap it and mod and all that fun stuff?

Im keeping the car as you see it now. Well I'll be cleaning it up real nice though. I have a 2K Grand Am v6 now with all the good stuff. The base model no power firebird is going to be my weekend cruiser now. Im a married man with a new house and working full time. I can't keep driving this bird as much as I would like. I plan on doing a full resto of the car once again and keep the iron duke in it. I don't ever think I will remove it unless it completely dies. I would be willing to rebuild it until it is no longer repairable. Having the iron duke is an odd combo. Gonna keep it that way.

I believe they were rated at 95hp or something.....There were some super duty parts you could buy from GM to hop up the ol duke to get some pretty respectable numbers for its size.

oh yeah, I used to own a vette. My very first car to drive was a silver 1984 Chevette CS 4 door. I loved that car. It was fun. I would beat it like crazy.

May it rest in peace. :hail:

I test drove a 4 cylinder Camaro just the other day. It was a neat car but it was slower than all hell. I have an LG4 Z with 106k miles on it and it feels like an LS1 compared to that thing. I honest to *** believe that I could've kicked it's *** in the 1/8 mile if I was on foot.

I plan on my next car being a vette. I love the idea of having a car with a plastic (rust free) body, 2 seats, great styling, and 180mph capability with a few bolt ons and maybe a power adder.
Engine aside, your Iron Duke looks sharp on the outside, especially with the 16s.

Thanks, I wanted to go with something other than the common deep dish 16s. I liked the 87 formula rims so I got a set. I also couldn't pass them up for the meager price of $100 for all four.

Lets see:
Car: $500
Getting her running: aprox $400+
Paint job: Free
Rims: $100
Tires: $380
4thgen Buckets: $100
WS6 front sway bar $10

building a sweet handling and looking machine on a cheap budget: Priceless

Damn GM did a good job of cluttering up an engine bay that's supposed to hold a V8...but only has a 4 cylinder

I had to remove it to get the black plastic vent thing off that is on the cowl. Im glad I did too. I found a block of insulation in there that had been water logged for a long time. I never noticed it. You see the firewall right behind the valve cover....rust....thats what caused it too!!!

Good eye on that man. I didn't think anyone would notice.

For being a 4cylinder GM really did clutter up this engine bay. I may be removing the AC junk since it no longer works. That should free up some space. It still is very easy to work on this engine though. Plenty of room to wander.

If they make a turbo for this engine I would definitly look into it!!!!

Whenever I see your cars engine it reminds me of my fathers old 87 S-15 with the 2.5L in it. It was quite underpowered but 35 mpg in a truck was awsome, and I did tortue it some, so I will say they were tough.

I never tried the driver's side one, maybe try pulling up on the part that tilts up then slide the plate under there that holds it on off to ths side to get it off?
