Need to Protect My Car...
My car has been messed with twice this week - the gas cap was taken & then someone broke in to steal loose change. No damage to the vehicle in either case but I fear someone will try to steal my car if given the chance.
I would like some information on alarm systems; what is the best thing I can get and how much will it cost me? I'm asking you people because I trust you. Let me know what you have on your cars.
If this is not on the right board, please move it. Thanks in advance.

Oh man Silver87S.C. I would get a locking gas cap. My old one had been taken off at work and I got one the same day, I would be weary of someone putting something in my gas tank and screwing the motor. They only cost like 5 to 10 bucks. Do you have a video camera? It could be time for some video survelliance to catch someone fukin with your property. I hope you can catch this person or persons who did this. I dont have a car alarm but I will get one later this year. You could even get a brake club, not a steering wheel one "the person can saw through the steering wheel" the brake pedal is much much harder to mess with. Sorry I dont know anything about car alarms but I hope your cituation improves.

I like the specs of that system. The shock part is what I'm concerned about. I've heard stories of car thiefs sueing the car owner for being electrecuted, and plus I wouldnt want me or my friends and famliy accidently shocking ourselfs.

here's an idea for you. just an idea, something i plan on doing this summer ( already have an alarm personally )
go on ebay.com and for about $10 you can get a FAKE video camera. mount the camera inside your car in a visible spot. it looks just like a real one, and will more than likely scare way thieves. either that, or they'll try stealing the camera lol

i'd go with dei since their alarms are more versatile then alpine at a fraction of the cost.
alarms can be a crutch though that to many people trust on. whoever your upsetting you need to stop. that kind of thing doesn't happen much unless you have a really hot car or some interior goodies.
sounds to me like doing of neighbor kids. i remember someone on here had a video camera pointed out their window that recorded their car over night. that might be an idea for you.
proximity sensors are nice, but more annoying than anything. alot of it depends on how much money you want to spend and your working knowledge of things. you can go crazy all out or just subtle.
i would recommend picking up a dei stage2 alarm which would have glass protection and electronic sensory...basically if someone breaks the window or opens a door or hood (anything that causes a light to go on) the alarm will go off.
make an investment in sirens...place one in an obvious place under the hood. dei sells really loud and extremelly small versions that can be hidden throughout the car. one on the inside so that it's annoying for them to be in it and then the others through out the car.
2 as a minimum.......that way the time it takes to break in and find the first siren you'll hear the other one and chances are if it's kids they will just run.
or you can do like myself and have 6 sirens and uplinks to a laptop as well as a wireless recorder for the 3 mini-cameras. i can literally watch the inside and outside of my car while i sit in class or at work.

The best alarm system I ever had was the Clifford Solaris. Remote start, keyless entry, anti-code stealing, automated battery charging, auxillery power, starter kill, fuel pump kill, two stage impact sensors, remote windows, anti-towing, And alot more crazy stuff. You can also program it with your laptop. The sucker was as loud as Texas state law would allow.

BTW DEI, Clifford and one other popular brand I can't remember the name of are all the same company. DEI and Clifford systems are produced in the same factory.
Proximity alarms were designed for convertables. They are cool if used properly. I would set the proximity field to just the inside of the car. If you set it to go beyond the doors it will go off all the time. If a cat farts near it the sucker will go off.

picked up my cameras from a spy shop....roughly 70 a piece and the size of a quarter.
picked up the laptop used
used a dei higher model number alarm that allowed for multiple sirens.
paid 20 a piece for the mini sirens three total
used the 2 large sirens that came with the alarm under the hood
the rest was all simple spy ware that you can pick up at major spy shops like the recorder, the transmitter and software, etc.
like i said, it's nice to sit inside and be able to watch the car from my laptop....i did all of the installation so that saved me alot though.

i have my car parked outside my bedroom window so its nice having the proximity sensor set to farther then the inside. that way if someone even walks up to it it will beep. it gives them 5 seconds to get away, then it goes off for 30 or something, and shuts off if they dont open a door or smash anything.

Well I have to give an opposing viewpoit here....
The DEI is a very up-to-date system, and with all of the toys Jeff has he is probably going to keep his car without doubt. But if you want a DEI system, or any system with outboard relays for that matter, please realize all it takes to bypass that system is to unplug the bulkhead plug from the alarm module and its bypassed. It would also bypass any starter/fuel interrupt. I know this because of my prior experience as a collateral recovery agent
Another alarm that is vulnerable is anything made by Code Alarm. There is a small bypass/programming button that is usually hidden near the hood release on most installs. Turn ignition to "on" position, push button once and its disarmed and your gone. And if I know this, being a professional, then the professional car theif would also be quite aware too .
That being said, most alarm systems are just a deterrent. If someone actually knows what they're doing and wants your car they're going to get it no matter what alarm it has. I think Jeff has it covered as best as you possibly could imagine. If you got pics you got proof and thats what matters.

i agree..........it took 30 seconds to disarm my alarm and clean my car leaving a 10,000 dollar damage bill.
i don't trust alarms for anything. i use it mainly as the first stage of deterant for those who aren't in the know like mike here. after that all i can do is sit back and watch. however the use of cameras as well as tracking devices is more than enough to take care of any business. i found this to be a better alternative than to try and confront the person directly and take a chance going to jail.
