My dad has a 61 Chevy with orange engine (original) in it ... look very sweet. We just got done rebuilding a '79 305 and sprayed it GM corporate blue ... this too looks very sweet. I would go with the blue for one reason. I can see any leaking fluids that is running on the engine more clearer then on the orange or red.

I like Chevy Red/Orange
I personally like an engine painted chevy orange/red. When I get a chance to build my 383, I plan to paint it chevy orange/red.
Just my .02

i just picked a shade of blue that i liked and painted my engine, valve cover holddowns, and injectors. then i looked at the label and realized that i just painted my whole setup "Ford Blue"

Chevy orange... looks like crap compared to all the other pics, though :P Mine's not really too bright looking, because the engine is buried in hoses and wires :P
Next time I have the engine out, im probably going to do bright red or blue, though.

i did the block and heads gloss black. the intake is natural aluminum and the accessory brackets were bead blasted to natural aluminum. looks good IMO
yeah, i'm pretty happy with the black. i really wanted a color to stand out but in the end i'm happy with my choice, the polished aluminum heads and intake along with everything else take up so much attention as it is that trying to color match the block or go with a off color might have looked a bit out of place.
good luck with your choice!

i have pretty much ruled out orange, red, and aluminum colored.
orange and red will be just to bright i think
and aluminum is what my engine used to be and it got dirty way to fast for me.
i think i am going with a dark blue or black

the only nice thing about black is that beyond all the other things you already know it will look nice in any color car. either choice is good though, the darker the better for a driver. a trailer queen is a different story entirely.
I had heard that normal body paints could stand up to the heat of an engine. I plan on painting my car silver in the future, so I had my buddy, who works in a body shop, grab me the right paint and soon I was staring at a beautiful candy apple red motor in my freshly painted black engine bay. Unfortunately, it wasn't meant to be. It looked absolutely amazing for about three months until it started to peel and change colour. I had to rebuild the engine about two months later and I had it redone in black, but retained my candied timing cover, valve covers and clear-coated my new aluminum intake. I'd say that it looks pretty sweet, although, with all of the black, I doubt if it will be show worthy. That's ok, she's for driving anyways.

pretty much i am looking for something to look nice and stay somewhat clean.
thanks for all the opinions everyone!
Go with the GM Blue. It contrasts nicely with chrome & aluminum, shows leaking fluids well (heaven forbid). It brightens the engine bay a little without being distracting, doesn't make the engine disappear like black, and hasn't been done to death at shows like chevy orange. Don't get me wrong, I love chevy orange and have done several engines in that color, but like another guy said on here IMHO it looks too 'retro' for a thirdgen. Just my input, use it as you will................
