Ram Air I Hood functional?

I saw that there was a functional ram air setup that hooked to the throttle body on TPI cars that hawks offered with their ram air I hoods.

I was wondering if this might work for the ram air I hood from American Sports Car Design's? Anyone know?? I'll be getting an LT1 soon, and I'd like to have functional ram air when I get that hood. Thanks,

I'm no physics major, but I believe the Ram Air I isn't the most functional hood, because the air glides right over the openings.

The 2 openings at the beginning of the hood. The way air flow works, there's hardly even any air entering the vents. IIRC

The flat T/A hood grill's wouldn't work so good even if opened up.

The Ram Air hood should catch some air, that's what I think he's talking about. Like this pic from Hawks.

he's talking about the RA I hood.

btw...I'm planning on going with that hood too. I have yet to see anybody with a functional setup on it. something about the radiator and hood not having enough clearance...

who know though....maybe I'll have to fab something up

I know he's talking about the RA I hood. But even so, the vents don't stick up high enough in the air in order for air to flow into them. It's been brought up in the past with diagrams of how air flow works when the car is going down the road.

Of course I'm going off my memory here, and I know it's the case for similar hoods, whether it's the same for the RA I I'm not positive.

Regardless of whether or not air flows thru the nostrils, which it does BTW. You'd still have to modify the hood. The ASCD hood is setup to direct air to where the stock air filter is on the passenger side fender. To run any kind of filter right of the TB for "true" ram air effect you'd need to hack out the back of the hood. It's pretty easy to do just a bit unsettling hacking up you $500 hood.

I did it. I cut a slot open about 1.5". With the hood down you can clearly see my airfilter, there is nothing blocking the air. The slot ends up above the rad support.

thanks Karps. Do you have any pics of the underside of the hood before/after?

Its designed for the RA II hood, but next time I'm up there (I have a RA1 on my 87 TA) we'll bolt one up and see what the problem areas would be. I don't think it would fit without some cutting. Thats why Redraif went with the Suncoast hood; it has a functional airbox, and the hood is made for it. Its more money, but worth it IMHO if you want a functional box.

true. But I've never liked the lines of the suncoast hood. There must be a way to a have a functional RA I hood. It's got more clearance than the stock TA hood, so perhaps some sort of modified camaro TPI would work.

Well to give you an idea of what is needed to make a hood work with the airbox...the Hawks airbox is basically the same design as the suncoast box...

And so you know with a bit of rigging and some tubing from Homedepot, the box will work with a 2.8 or 3.1. I was even able to retain my mas air flow sensor as you can see in the pic. the accordian piece came with the air box from suncoast (in front of the MAFS), but I think I will replace it with the smooth style I got from Home Depot (behind and coupling to the intake)

see here is my box, with my 2.8...

Now the underside of the hood, so you can get an idea where the air inlet would have to be positioned for the box to line up...

Based on where the exterior snouts are on the RAI hood, the air could be directed in, but I don't know if the hood's hump is wide enough at that point to house the box. We would have to try to fit Joe's ASCD RAI on my car with the suncoast box afixed. Lord knows when we will have anytime for that!

Thanks Redraif. Whenever I get my hood (3 months), I'll be sure to make it functional....one way or another.

ram air is not. You would only be making yourself a nice cai. All for looks on cars.......

Heres a pic finally. Still not that great but you can see the open element air cleaner. It's the darkness in the middle.

Like stated earlier it's really just like a CAI, but I did seem to notice a bit of difference. Maybe next time I got to the track I'll bring some duct tape and make some runs with it closed to see if there is any real difference.
