i used a factory 84 tank. I bought a gas tank sump through ebay from "B4CTom" he's a member on these boards. Anyways I took it to a radiator repair shop and gave them the tank for 2 days with $65 and they gave me back the tank. I showed them exactly where I wanted the sump and they outlined around it and then they cut 5 holes into the tank in the shape of a dice.

kinda like that....then they welded the sump on.....this creates a miniature "baffle" in there to allow the gas to stay in the sump around a turn. Then they baked off the old rust with a torch and painted it black for me. I am sure they filled the tank with an "inert gas" meaning that it's non-flammable so the tank won't explode. Hope this answers your questions.

Yeah, don't EVER go welding on a gas tank that has been filled before. Even the pros, with all their knowledge and safety can get bit in the *** by this one. My dad knew a guy that had been welding tanks his entire life always took all the precautions from cleaning the tank to filling it with water before he started welding on it. Even after YEARS of doing this, one day he started on a tank and it blew up in his face. It nearly killed him. So, whatever you do, don't ever attempt to weld on a tank that has been filled before at home. I'd rather not hear about anyone else on Thirdgen.org dying anytime soon, even if it isn't related to working on cars or going fast.

Be careful out there,
Harry

yea i DEFINATELY didn't want to weld near a gas tank....so off to the professionals with this one. That tank could become shrapnel pretty easily i would think.

Is that the same sump that they sell in Jegs and Summit? Would you happen to have anymore pictures of it?

Thanks,
Aaron

nope those are the only pics....i'll put more up when i finish the fuel lines. Anyways yea....it's really similar to the jeg's one. My friend has that one welded onto his gas tank. Works out well for him too. Now if only i could finish this car for spring.....

Is there room for more fittings in the sump. I want to run 2 fuel pumps one for the carb and one for nitrous and would like enough fittings to hook up both. Or can you weld 2 sumps on? Anyone know where to get the bungs for the fittings, I'm going to run 3/8" line I think?
