My car was broken into
It must have happened early this morning. They stabbed the door underneath the lock which I guess must have knocked the locking arm over and ripped my cd player out, tearing the center console in half and breaking the shift plate too. Nothing else was stolen or messed with. I don't care about the deck, it was a refurb piece of junk but the damage to the car has really got me down. I've only been in Houston going on two months now and this is the first time anything like this has happened to me in my life.
Besides getting an alarm which I am now looking into or getting the hell out of Houston, does anyone have any ideas to keep this from happening again?

Oh man, that sucks.
I live in the woodlands and I never have to worry about that stuff happening. Hell, i've seen people leave thier 80K BMW's running w/ keys in the car to go check on something inside of a store.

Make sure you get a stereo with a removable face plate and ALWAYS remove the plate.. I lost mine by forgetting to take it out when I went to sea for a week..
I also have the grant no-wheel-no-steal security system..
get a paging alarm if you have the money... heck even a sticker and a faux flashing light might deter the would-be criminals..
sorry about the damage.. in mine they just smashed the window to get to the stereo..

I've been there man. My car was brokin into in Houston as well.
Tips to all:
While parking....
1) Park close to the store....this is very very important.
2) Park as far away from the road as you can (do not let your car be seen from the highway at all)
3) Take your faceplate off. (doh!)
4) If you're in a bad area....do all of the above and show up with a dirt covered thirdgen. If it's a piece...most will leave it be
5) NEVER EVER GO TO FRY'S ON I-45 IN HOUSTON with a thirdgen

I only park close to the store if I'm in a bad area. Most times, I park far from other cars to avoid door dings. When I park far, I park by a light though. My radio has a black faceplate, but I still remove it most of the time.

My alarm =
Sorry to hear about your car
I never take my car anywhere where I have to leave it for more then 10 minutes. I got an alarm also, with the sensitivity jacked way the hell up. Don't fart next to my car, it will start to scream

Thanks for the replies guys.
There is "security" at my appartment complex but I bet having a dog around would do a better job than they do. I really didn't think my car would get broken into. I figured no one would want the junk player I had and I never keep anything else in the car besides my maglite, which was not stolen.
The problem with alarms is that everyone in the complex has one and no one seems to care when they go off because they go off all the time.
3.1EyeCandy - That Fry's is only like a mile from where I live. Wonderful part of Houston isn't it?
