18 inch wheels and tires
18 inch wheels and tires
I have ordered boyd coddington rims, sized 8x18 and 10x18. I plan to wrap them in 235/45 and 275/40 tires. Has someone a pic of a car equipped with this size of tire? Ah, i almost forgot, i am gonna do this on a '89 camaro convertible, the car is lowered by two inches. thanks
anything wider then a 1-1/2" is really noticeable in rims, not my first choice but i suppose you can make it work.
personally i think a 245 would be better up front but you have to factor in the profile as well. definately will have a noticeable difference with that setup.
i'm running 275/35 on a 9.5/18 front and a 295/35 on a 10.5/18 rear and everything works well for me. just make sure that whatever combo you go with that you try to keep the overall stock dimension of the tire and you should be fine.
my new setup is almost identical to my old 245/50/16 on the stock z rims so not much changed in the transition besides a harder tire to move and tracking the road alot more.
good luck.

In my opinion your tire choices are too narrow for those wheel widths. 245s come STOCK on an 8" wheel, and the sidewall profile is pretty straight. If you put a 235 on, it's going to look funny. Likewise, a 275 on a 10" wheel is pretty small. Stock 9" wheels come with 275 tires, and like with the 245s, it makes for a pretty straight sidewall. My buddy has some 225s on 8" wheels on his BMW and it looks silly. It reminds me of those lowriders that stick a 155 width tire on an 8" wide wheel.

Most of the stock thirdgens come with a wheel and tire combo that have a diameter of 25.6”. If you are using 18x8 front wheels I would use a 245/40/18 tire since it has a diameter of 25.71”. For the rear 18x10” wheel a 275/35/18 tire would give you a diameter of 25.58”. However, if you wanted something a little taller and wider you could use a 285/35/18 with a diameter of 25.85”.
You could use the sizes that you have listed but if you run a 275/40/18 on the rear it would have a diameter of 26.66” and could possibly cause some clearance issues, especially if your car is lowered.
All of these tire size should be safe to run on the width of wheels that you listed.
I am going with 255/45/17’s on my 17x8 fronts and 285/40/17’s on the 17x9.5 rear wheels that I finally got in.

I'll have some pictures of my car in about a month. I finally got
my centerline wheels in last week (after 6 weeks), and am
currently working on some cooling issues. After I touch up the
paint I will be putting the new wheels on and will take some pics.
By the way nice car, what wheels were on it in those pictures.

dan88,
i buy only japanese tires (bridgestone/yokohama/falken etc.) because they look wider than Us or european products. A goodyear 245 looks like an yokohama 235. That's because the japs make the profile 235mm wide, while the rest of the world make the whole thing 235mm.

Those are nice. I always pictured that style more on a old
Impala, lowered down, and in the g-machine style. However, I
think in the 18" size they will look pretty nice on your car.

nazz28,
i was on a car meeting yesterday, i saw them in size 8x19, and 10x20 on a '57 bel air. I just checked the photos i made and they helped me make my decision on what size i should choose. They were wrapped in 225 and 275's, and it looked great. If anyone doubts that, i'll be glad to post the pics

Hey IrocDan, What size wheel spacers did you run on your car with the Z06 wheels. What are the offsets on the Z06 wheels that you got?
i'd also like to know............there is no possible way i could get mine to tuck in that close without some inner fender work to bring it in some, let alone even begin to turn if i dropped the front that low.
looks really nice, i'd like some more details to know exactly what you did as i would like mine to fit that nice.

so what's the offset and make..........?
i have the same front adapter size with 9.5 and there is no way possible to bring them in that close without body modification
did you roll the fenders and massage the inner rear wells?

now the rears were able to come in alot since it was a 9.5 rim, however the backs cannot come in any further without some serious inner fender work. they are 10.5 295/35.
i would like to know how you got yours to work so nicely.

made my decision
So, although i doubt that it is interesting for anyone of you guys, let me say to you that i have ordered the tires for my 8 and 10x18 boyd wheels. They will be wrapped in 225/45's and 275/40 bridgestone S-O3. I will post pics as soon they are on the car.

Here's a question to all of you guys running bigger than stock wheels. How the heck do you turn?If I do anything than a partial turn on my 16's I am rubbing BAD. If I am backing up and pulling into a spot it rubs so bad my car stops and I have to REV it to get it to move. That is too scary fitting into a sport. I would love to run 17's or 18's but I can't even imagine another 1.5 inch width. Heck a U turn now is a PITA, I can't even imagine doing one than.
Any help?
Any help?
i have no problems at all but i also have measured out and fitted the wheels to work right.
15-20 it doesn't matter, the width of the rim and your tire choice is what makes the difference. it all depends on what your trying to do.

Figured I would add my personal experiance as well. I am running 18x9.5" C5 wheels all the way around with a 275/35/18 tire. The front and rear spacers were 2" but the C5 brakes bring the front out another .300" and make them look better imho and I am changing to 2.5" spacers in the rear. When these tires wear out I am going to run 295/35/18s on all four corners. By the way I am lowered with Eibach sportlines and everything on the suspension is fresh. I have no rubbing and can turn as tight as I like. I think the spacing has more to do with it than anything because my old 255/45/17s used to rub and these don't,

I put 17" X 9.5" with 275/40's all around. I wish i would of went with a larger tire as I like a bit of a bulge. Car has a 2" bell tech drop in front.

I wish I had a digital camera to take some pictures with. Once I get some normal pictures I will scan them in for you. Kandied91z
I think there is a small diferance between the Camaro fenders and the Firebird fenders which may be why mine works? Anyway I only have about a 1/2" of clearance between my tires and the struts with the 2" spacers and 18x9.5 C5 wheels. I tried putting on a buddies 295/35/18 on a Y2K vette wheel and it hit the strut untill I converted to the C5 brakes (extra .300" clearance) and it appears to clear in but I did not drive it more than maybee a mile like that so it may scrape on some bumps. Anyway, I will try to get pictures...
