Fuel door Popper?

Here's the idea tell me what ways we could possibly make it work. I want to do one of two things to my fuel door

1. Install a popper mechanism, used by most newer cars, where I could just flip a switch and it would open up. This would allow me to make the door completely flush.

2. I would make the door itself flush, but add an indentation to the quarter panel. I think the indentation on cars looks a lot better than the lip we have on ours.

What do you think? Anyone else done this? The car is in the body shop now so the sky is the limit on what I will be doing to this car.

Thanks

James

if the sky was truly the limit, i would remove it all together and put it either behind the rear plate, or like redraif did and have it inside the hatch.. athough i dont like the idea of filling the gas inside the car...

unless you make it perfectly smooth and flush, i wouldnt even bother modding it... waste of time and money IMO.

Well, I am now moving about 65 miles away from my job (buying a house) so it will probably only be a weekend car, however, if buying all of the parts new laid out by 84 1le I am not sure if I see a problem with it being a daily driver type of thing. I mean you don't fill the gas tank up everyday anyway

I do not want to put the tank insdie or out the back, I like it where it is, I just always wanted thge popper. There convenient, allows the car too look good, etc... Plus with all of the other stuff I am doing what is one more body mod

just remember anything back there that is electric is liable to be soaked with gas from time to time. do you really want the possibility of a spark? my advice, leave it alone or at the very least, try something mechanical. a cool fuel door would be a dumb thing to lose your car over...

just my $.02

i don't think you'd need anything electircal. my dad's car has one and its nothing more than a spring on the fuel door, a pull latch (and cable to the cab), and a spring on the latch to rest it when its not pulled. nothing that would cause a spark of any kind.

but, it also seems like it has the possibility of being a headache. probably not that hard... just putting in the flush door, springs, and running cable... but i don't know if its really worth it, to me.

however, there's also the safety part - nobody can dump sugar in your tank if they can't open the gas door.... so that'd be a plus, no doubt.

I guess little things like that would bother some people enough to do it. It sounds ok. Gas door doesn't even bother me.

well if you DO do it, just a suggestion:

since the doors just bolt in, get another one from a yard... do your mods to it..

have it painted along with your stock one... and if the modded one doesnt work out, put the stock one back on..

as for the way to open it, i like the idea if it being spring loaded to open, and a latch holding it shut... pop the trigger on the latch and it opens.

I am going with a spring loaded setup all mechanical no electrical and Mr Dude I am going to do exactly that. That way I have my original just in case. Thanks to everyone that responded. I will make sure to post pics.

If he's hooking it up out of an SL2, then you guys are missing another obvious feature of this mod. If you're able to completely use the SL2 Fuel Door, latch, cable, etc. then you're not able to open the gas door at all, without pulling the lever. This would be a great stopper for minor vandals, such as Flynlow92RS ran into, when someone stuffed a rag down his filler neck and lit it. Sure they could pry the door open, but it might be just enough extra time that they'd think twice about someone watching or noise or something.

I made mine totally flush and just stick my pinky finger in the crack to open it up when I need to.

Which is often.
