shaved front end to fenders
shaved front end to fenders
I was fixing a small dent in my rear by my tail lite and when i was done i looked at the front of the car and got an idea, you know the small space between the front end nose and the fenders? I was thinking of how smooth the car ( firebird ) would look with that space filled, sanded and painted to match the car. I know if you ever needed to change the front end it would make it harder but i think it would look cool. Does anyone know what im talking about? :lala:

scauffiel tried that on his whole car and it kept cracking because it moves and flexes so much, so I don't think its possible.

well, if you bonded the 2 parts from behind, and then used a flexible plastic filler, that might work. somthing like what you use to repair the tears in the nose.

I still think it would flex and crack. I don't know the method scauffiel used, but I know he tried for a while and nothing worked.
What about fiberglass underlays then filler? I did it to my rear bumper and so far its been ok and i only used bondo. Takes alot of sanding to get the shape right. But when its done it makes the car look so smooth.

i wouldnt bother with it really. i honestly HATE body filler. i like true straight metal. my car got hit in july so my dad and i are doing body work. i totally stress on him i want hardly any filler and so far the extra work to get the metal as straight is can get has worked off. if u wanna shave somethin do the antena, im doin mine just for kicks.

Does look alot better without the big whip sticking out of the car.

Does look alot better without the big whip sticking out of the car. a better hidden antenna, and a signal amp should probly solve that for him.

yes we are talking about the same line.....and it is smoothed....its not perfect but its done. just look at the pic i posted...you cant see a line, all you can see is where the difference between the metal and plastic make the paint look a little different. and the line in your pic, im convinced its just some photo flaw or sumtin, and its barely visable....the angle of it makes no sense for it to be the line. but either way....the photo quality isnt good enough to prove it one way or another.

eh, it was smoothed... but jsut not very well..
i donno if its from the flexing or the prep work... but if it comes out like that, i wouldnt do it.

If you had fiberglass front fenders the probability of pulling it off seems greater to me. In fact, using a resin of some sort (not exactly sure how working with glass works), but you may be able to bond the two pieces (even though the front isn't glass). Just a notion. iroc2nv, what kinds of problems have you had?

actually the only problems that i have/am having is the fact that certain places keep bubbling...i dont know why but its always on the front pass. side and the rear drivers side...

I tried doing on my 85 that I had, and it ended up cracking too. I think to successfully do it, you would have to section out about 1/2" between the two panels, put a backing plate behind it, and then fill it with urethane filler so it will remain flexable with the body.

u can clearly see that the line between the nose and the fender is not there anymore. Firebirds dont have a wrap around front spoiler like camaros, they have the spoiler integrated with the front bumper and then 2 small filler peices are on the bottom of the fender to complete the wrap around, (similar to the rear bumper on all thirdgens.
Also the firebird Ground effects dont have holes in them like the Camaro ones do, they mount up differently and are made of urethane Whereas the camaro atleast up until 91 had fiberglass ground effects and mounted in that area u circled , via 2 screws, that the emblem covers. the area that u circled on the ground effect is not modified at all.

The only way to do it properly is with a fiberglass front clip. I have seen one for an early 80s Camaro, but none for a bird or later camaro. The clip works like the viper and the fenders hood and front bumper raise with the hood.

I had posted this about a year or 2 ago but..
I wish that I still had the pic but there was a customized 89 Camaro(convertible I think),red and yellow paint, that had all the lines filled/smoothed in from the ground efx to both front and rear bumper covers. It looed pretty sharp except for the 10gal fish tank in the back.

I agree if you had a whole fiberglass dog house (fenders and front nose) then you could pull it off pretty easily. It's almost impossible to join metal to fiberglass. I installed a set of TA fender louvers in my old 84 Z28 with fiberglass and duraglass. It looked really great but as time went on....it started to have hair line cracks in the filler. Far away, it still looked good, but the closer you got...the better you could see the small hair line cracks. Mostly every panel on any car moves...whether because of temperature or because of bumpy roads....you could try it....but I'm not sure if you would be happy with the results later on down the road. I shaved my antenna on my current car (1991 Z28) I welded up the hole then used some body filler. I try to stay away from applying a ton of bondo anywhere....I had like 2 small dents in my passenger side door I had to fill too.
