"The One That Got Away"
When I first got into thirdgen's it was purely for the look. I didn't really know anything about them and hardly understood what I do now about the differences in models. Don't get me wrong, I love my RS but only one year and model car makes me whince when I see it, knowing I could've had one. (The $2000 that the car stood above my budget now seems like change.)
:hail: :hail: :hail: SMURFN' Z28 for exactly the car that now haunts me. The 1985 Z28 Camaro Coupe :hail: Anyone else have one that got away?

There was a 70,000 mile near mint Black with Red Stripes 1992 Z28, with almost fully loaded. It was about $2,000 out of my budget. If I knew more about cars back then I would have convinced my parents to lend me the extra money I needed.

Yeah SMURFN' Z28's Camaro is super nice! He was in the Caravan to Denny's Memorial Day Party (Thirdgen Fest) last year and Mine was parked next to his for the party. I dont know what it is about that car but I really really like it, its one of my favorites on the site (maybe becasue its so clean!) The ride home from Denny's Party was fun with him, Jeff (Jeff1367) and Jim (BronYrAur) too, even though he beat me.
BTW is SMURFN' Z28's car from California??

Black 92 GTA, t-tops, 350. It was like 5500$, and it was like a few months after I bought my v6, and since I had just got out of high school and was working at Circuit City, so I was lucky to be able to afford the car I had. Add the v8 insurance, I don't think I could've afforded it. Oh well, **** happens I guess!

Yeah i have something to add, just check my sig.
When i found this site as i was casually surfing the net 3yrs ago, i knew nothing about thirdgens, even the name "thirdgen" was foriegn to me. As soon as i saw the cars on here i fell in love, worked my *** off for 2 years and finally saved enough money. Another year of searching classified ads and newspapers led me nowhere until i saw the 85 iroc listed on here. 1 week and $700 later i was proud to call myself a thridgen owner. After pulling the motor and trans (junked when i bought it), and meticulously doing all the bodywork, i finally finished my 350 and t-5 swap. The first time i drove that car (or any thirdgen for that matter) i was scared sh*tless. I quickly developed a new respect for the word "TORQUE". Then after all that money, and all that hard work, the car g*ds surprised me with an electrical fire that ruined my engine bay. I wound up pulling the motor and trans, and giving away the body.
I keep in touch with the new owner, and we both know that someday i will buy that car back. He has her all torn down to the frame now, and is doing a full restoration. At least i know shes in good hands.

Before I bought this car (when i was 17) I saw a beautiful dark blue 1966 GTO with chrome Torq Thrust wheels. It was flawless. I had no idea about the condition of the engine, but it was selling for $6,000. So I got a job and started saving for it, but it was sold before I got the money. Then while working, I saw a beautiful '90 RS that sounded great pull into the parking lot with a For Sale sign in the rear window. So I bought it and have been adding **** to it ever since. Sometimes I love this car, and other times I hate it. But I am almost done now, and when I am finished (yeah right) I am sure I will love it.

well to get away i think you gotta have it and for me it was the 89 Iroc. Probably the dumbest thing i have ever done selling that car... it was great! and if i had it to do over again there would be no question about me keeping it.

Here is my old car, a 92 RS.
But I'm glad I let that get away. I'm much more happy with my IROC (350, t-tops, better condition, and I got it for cheaper that I paid for the RS)

A red '89 GTA just like this:
The bank wouldn't aprove the loan for $6,000 because "its a ten year old car and not worth that much."
A month later I bought the 'bird for half the price.

Mine was the one that got away. I'd seen it in the parking lot at the Safeway near my old house, in probably 1995, because i was still in school (VT), and couldn't afford it. A gorgeous 35k-mile '86 T/A in red over silver. Just what a 19-year-old college kid with no job needs to be driving. I never 'lusted' after a vehicle before that, but that car was all I could think about. Especially when my car was giving me trouble. It was there just about every day for a couple of weeks, and then it dissapeared. I figured it got sold. I didn't have a way to get that kind of money in any amout of time, so I figured I'd missed my chance on that car. I was actually bummed out about it.
Three years later (1998) I was done with school and working, so I could afford a car, but I was still driving my old Safari Wagon. (way too attached to that old clunker) I was heading over to my parent's house, and what do I see at the Safeway, but a Red-over-Silver Trans/Am with a 'For Sale' sign. I stopped, checked it out, and lo and behold, it was the same car. (It had a 'Red Dog' sticker in the back window that I remembered) I wrote down the number, checked with Blue Book (the guy was about $500 lower than KBB
) and called the bank.
When I went to the guy's house to check out the car, I learned from him that it was the same car I'd seen years before. He'd had a change of heart, and decided to hang on to the car for a few more years. In those three years, he'd driven it maybe five times, so he decide to sell it.
So now, it's mine. And I'm not selling it. Ever.

I was looking at 2 Z28's when I found mine...
There were 2 for sale here in town. I found one for 3100. It was a nice blue 87 IROC 5 speed. No T-Tops tho.
I also found a somewhat nice (needed paint) 85 Z28. 15" wheels, drum brakes, auto... Nice car, but wasn't what i wanted.
I finally found my 87 IROC on Ebay. Ttops, TPI, 4 wheel disc, all options...
I'm overall glad I ddint go with the other cars. I saw the 85 smashed up 2 nights ago. It slid into a Jeep. ouch.

I lucked out with my first thirdgen, I nearly bought a RS and a couple SC's before I realized I could actually afford a IROC or Z28. My first thirdgen was a MINT 85 IROC with the 305 TPI (and 3.73s already). What a friggin sweet ride. I managed to skip the base model thirdgen step, but neither of my last two have technically been as nice as that 85 IROC... Can't believe I totalled it hitting a deer at 85ish mph.
Yeah, my parents helped me get my first 3rd gen on high school. My dad found a mint 89 Formula 350 for $3800. Had low miles and some performance add ons. My dad drove like 2 hours to look at it and came back saying it was ragged out.
About 2 weeks later, I got my 91 RS for $3000. A couple of years later, my dad fessed up that the formula wasn't ragged out; in fact it WAS mint. He said it was way too fast for a high school student. I was pissed but it's ok now. I have my T/A that I always wanted...

The one that got away for me was my parents 67 fastback Mustang. they bought brand new in 67. They actually let me drive it quite a bit. Unfortunately we drove it year round and winter is really hard on old mustangs, plus I beat the **** out of it, it had an A code 289, auto, with posi, and disc brakes.
Anyway it was completely trashed by 1976, with only 55,000 on it, (Ford Junk), and we sold it for $125.
The buyer hopfully restored the car.
That is the one car I wish I still had.

There was an 87 Formula 350 last Feb on e-bay. It had 20 miles on it and still had the plastic on the seats. :hail:
It was unreal. Did not have 25 grand lying around.

1991 Z28 convertible with all of 6000 original miles on it. It was a dealership owned car. it was pristine. The engine was so clean I would eat off of it. oh man I drool at the thought now...
I was at the dealership finishing the paperwork to finance it. However, the paperwork had not been finished and a guy came in with a cashiers check and bought it right out from under me... Cash speaks faster than paper (financing)

Several years ago when I was on vacation in Florida I was told that we had a Trans Am traded in at our dealer. The salesman told me it was a 1989 and in good shape, but it had a V6 so according to him he thought it was a base V6 car with the badges and GFX. In shock I asked him if it was white with a tan interior and he said yes! Maybe it was, and maybe it wasn't, but I'll always remember that I had the chance of owning a clean TTA for $4000.
Oh, and my 85 Camaro Z28 coupe didn't get away!
